i was reading the post about dog signs and it made me remember this lady i used to know who had a beware of gun sign or something of that nature on her front door. i have been to many many different cities and states and i haven't seen another one like this. im wondering if this is a good idea. personally i don't want anybody to know i own and carry weapons, especially my neighbors. i want the intruder to be suprised not expecting it.

My beware of gun sign is the muzzle flash. I like to give people suprises.

Beware of gun? My guns are placid pieces of steel and plastic, harmless by themselves.

The owner on the other hand...

I would just put a beware of owner sign up. I don't want anyone to know I have guns in the house either. I would much rather suprise them.

If I was walking past your house and saw that sign, Mrs. A, I'd give 3-to-1 odds that you're a gunowner. Meek and mild is the ticket until the gloves come off...;)

Would this do?

NRA Window Sticker

I read somewhere that homes with NRA stickers in windows acctually had fewer breakins. The premis was that the BG's knew the owner not only hand guns, they knew how to use them. I don't know how true this is.

Firethorn, that will do nicely.

Leatherneck, I should have said, Never mind the dog beware of owner. I should have made myself more clear. My mistake.

BEWARE OF GUN sign means pemeditated murder if you need to defend yourself.

Depends on the Lawyers, Judge, and Jury. By the same argument, getting a CCW and carrying would be pre-meditated murder. I could argue that the person posted the sign in hopes of detering people from attempting to do the things that would force him or her to use it. Kinda like the fake security stickers.

A defensive shoot is a defensive shoot.

I'd go with beware of dog because dogs bark and no burglar wants noise.
I know people who will certainly go into your house if you have a beware of gun sticker. Criminals come in all different mind states so realy nothing but chance is for sure. An NRA sticker might get a brick in the window by an anti gunner. fake security stickers do help keep you from being singled out but many real criminals will know how to get past them and know if you realy have the equipment.

Total Crap.

That may very well be true, but I cannot imagine a prosecutor or plaintiff's attorney not getting it in front of a jury somehow, even if only thru scene photos. It certainly speaks to the mindset of the actor.

Remember, criminals are'nt known for making logical, well constructed decisions. I am not certain that they would evaluate any sign the way we would.

I personally try to keep the gun signs to a minimum I also don't like to let people know I have a cache of guns.

A beware of dog sign can get you in trouble too! If your dog ever does anything wrong, say bite a neighbor, then the sign is proof you knew you had a dangerous animal.

Proof? Not really.

Something a lawyer will bring up in an effort to convince twelve bored, distracted, stupid people to help him take your house, car, and a good chunk of your salary? Maybe. Probably.

But, if someone had to climb a fence or otherwise cross onto private property past a beware of dog sign in order to get bit, I can't see it working. Then again, I don't live in California. I've heard things are kind of screwy there.

Of course, if it is getting away from the owner and chasing people around the neighborhood and biting them, it is a dangerous animal and the owner should be held liable. A beware of dog sign would be bad news for the owner in that case.

Good points, sendec.

Amen!

I don't want the goblins to come in shooting!

Not big on signs personally - no matter what the intent of signage, the signage gives off additional and unwanted information. This can work against the original intent of sign.

Ex:
-Alarm Co sign - means you have something of value to protect.
-Warning - Oxygen in use, tells BG the occupant is probably not gonna to be able to put up a fight.
-Insured by Smith&Wesson , you have guns.
-For Sale , draws attention , house "might" be vacant and a place to stay for vagrant ...or a meth lab.

I had stickers provided by the local Fire Dept " Save my Dogs" on windows , subtle warning to anyone snooping , and the FD knew the logo and such in the event a fire broke out.

I still say " Warning - Mother-In-Visiting" would do more to protect a home. As dumb as crooks are...even they know better than to mess with a MIL armed with a rolling-pin :)

I've been thinking. How about one that says:

Burglers Welcome-
Mad Scientist Needs Test Subjects.

Don't know if this would work against burglars. It might keep the fire department away, though. Maybe not a good idea.
