BIG Brown Bear

Shes sitting, more like kneeling right at its butt. Shes actually uphill in the photo, as he was a plowing his way down through 2 foot soft mushy snow.
Hes 10'5" from tail to nose tip, and I was about 5 feet from the Bears face, and the camera isnt the best~~LOL!!~~

Its a popular way to take a Bear pict I think, I see them that way all the time, and might have been much better if she had stood back 30 feet and slightly above 'em..........like she was standing on 'em , eh??

No, really its as I descibe 'em, and very near twice as long as the wife is tall. Might point out too that that fat butt and these legs slayed to the side makes 'em look wide.
He was a very healthy Bear.

I have used a Mosin Nagant, in various type to get other Browns, Blacks, Wolves, Muskox , ect. My son uses his on Walruse as well.......

That is a really big bear for that part of the state! A friend of mine shot along the Kobuk that was 29 years old (he sent the tooth in), and it only squared a little better than 8 feet. Of course Kobuk is inland so I guess even up there they run bigger on the coast.

Or bring along a really small guy, like 5' or so, and have him pose at the far end of the bear. If you adjust your focus the bear will appear to be 15' long!

OTOH, I've seen this one mounted, and it looks bigger than in the picture.:)

The problem is that even if it is a very big bear, the person seeing the picture knows the size is being exaggerated. I've posted this picture before, and because it doesn't rely on camera tricks, it has a lot more impact.

This is the way a trophy bear picture should be taken!

I have mixed feelings. The bear above was the archery world record Kodiak, at least when it was shot in 2002. It's BIG.

Photos that clearly exaggerate the size are, of course, laughable. But what about photography that does a pretty good job of representing its subject matter, i.e. doesn't make it seem smaller and less scary than it really was?

Well, Cosmoline, She IS 5'2" :D

I wasnt trying for a deceptive photo, 'cause with all the fat and fur his iS big and she is 15 feet away....as I explained...... Shes sitting right at his butt.
I took several shots, but since they were all made with her sitting at his rear, none look "Better" or "Closer" or "Smaller"
To me , it was the standard way to picture a Bear with a Hunteress....I see them that way all the time.
Besides, theres no way in Hell the wife would hold that guys blood soaked head up, blood and Bear Lice getting all over her clothes out there.........

Still squared up Big anyway.
Next time we catch a big one, I'll put a doller over its head and one in the womans hand for size comparson~~LoL!!~~

Still went down with two well placed shots of FMJ, outta a Milsurp Mosin.........

Still in my shed tanning.......

Wait till I get her picture when were sleeping on it in our tent this summer :D

I do live on the Kobuk River, but we were on the Seward Pennesula, near our summer Salmon Camping area...............as well being in an area marked by Boon and Crockett as 'Brown Bear' country.
Lotsa people posing outside by the skin around here, our school Mascott "Noorvik Bears"

No offence taken a'tall :D

Just gotta say that after I looked at a lot more pictures like 'em, I noticed that some guys are tiny and the Bear way outta proportion, like a fisheye thing with cameras.
Its the most common "Bear pix" with the guy or gal sitting behind the Bear, but certainly, a few are some feet behind the animal rather than up against it, and its does distort the size.
When the skull dries, I'll let ya know abot its size, somewhere in the 25+ inch area, maby......never know.......

Yes, I agree! My smile would be huge. I think it is an accomplishment to have pictures like the ones posted. I wish I had that luck to kill such a beast. More hunting trips are a must!

Bear Hunting

The Trooper from Otz and a state biologist from Fbx swooped in together, unexpected like, and measured the wifes "Grizzly" skull. Pared down, and not much left for shrinkage, no lips, gums or cartalige on the skull base, to the bone and "offically" measured like 3 times, its 24 7/16ths sq., and with a hide mesurement of 10'-41/2' squared.

Made Boon & Crockett's "24 All Time"

Kodiak, They said that big bodied Bears dont always have Big Heads. The head is a bit wide and short ,he said as well.
He said to that the legs being an inch longer than the body wasnt common, and that this guy had room to grow yet, as his teeth were young and still perfect. Not many scars on his hide either, so he either just intemadated others or was a solitry roamer.
He said too that being a Spring Bear fresh outta the den he would easily have been 300lbs fatter in Fall time, after a Summer of Salmon munching.

Trooper told me the big difference from Arctic Grizz from southern Grizz(and Brown Bears) is their time spent in the den is time spent burning fat and not making it. They den up 6-7 months some years.
Arctic Grzz just dont get past 9ft they said and thats why they took a big interest and came to see for themselfs. He said he thought he was gonna "Call my Bluff" but ended up getting his picture taken with it~~LOL!!!~~ The big body was VERY fat, and with this guy being so sucessfull, his body outgrew his bones, like any fatman.~~LOL!!~~

They took a tooth and will let me know how old it is.
