This afternoon I decided to take my wife and granddaughter (4yrs) out to the Hometown Buffet.

Being in kind of a hurry, I didn't put on my 357 or 45 Like i normally would. Instead on the way out the door I grabbed my 22 semi off the top of the hoosier, and away we went.

while eating I was sitting there thinking what if a crazy walks in carrying a shot-gun or AK 47. Here I am sitting there with a pissy ass 22. What the Hell was I thinking when I left the house.

So it come down to one of those what if situation. It was a little scary, sitting there knowing in this kind of situation. that if the s-hit the fan that, there wasn't a thing I could do with what I had.

So I figure if you're going to carry, carry something that can make a differance and protect your family. At least give yourself a fighting chance.

I will never leave my house with a mouse gun again.

What the Hell was I thinking when I left the house.

I've found it easier to carry habitually rather than make decisions about it. I've always been decisive, but am also getting old: easier to reserve what's left of my mental facilities for things that actually need to be decided.

Mouse guns have their place.. but if you have something more potent that you can just as easily carry, I can see you not wanting to have the .22 as your only means of defense. Mine's a hideaway, or pocket gun when attire doesn't allow my usual .38 or .380 (it almost never allows my .357.)
Of course, if you're a good shot with it under duress, you probably would be about as effective against an AK-wielder as with most other commonly-carried handguns. Handguns just aren't made for AK attacks. Shotguns, maybe.
No need to be "scared" when poorly armed. Just be alert. After all, you probably weren't "scared" before you started carrying. I wasn't. I just want the extra edge the 2A entitles me to.
Hopefully, when TSHTF, you're just gonna "shoot your way to safety" with whatever you've got.

I know how you feel. A few years ago I was confronted by 6 people and all I had was a 22mag derringer.
Luckily several co-workers who were coming out of a nearby bar. They saw me and yelled. This got the attention of those confronting me, and they decided that since things were not in their favor and left.
While walking to my co-workers, I said to myself I will never leave the house without greater firepower.

Rule 1: Bring A gun.
A .22 beats an empty pocket.
That said, glad all went well.
Glad to hear you prefer the larger cals too.

A good meal, after-all

...

That's what you call, literally, "food for thought"..

I'm glad you "fed upon it, digested it, and became stronger, wiser, for it.."

I remember a common theme from Louis L'amor books in which the protagonist is surround by more than 6 BGs. Generally the leader spends time pointing out that there's more BGs than our hero can handle W/ a 6 shooter, and invariably the hero responds by telling the leader that no matter what else happens he will make sure that the leader goes down.

Lesson learned : Even if you only have a .22 derringer who wants to be the one volunteer to be shot?

Really?? Just a .22 semi-auto?? Ten high speed hollowpoints to the bad guy's head will take care of the problem.

If you can't hit him a few times in the head with a low recoiling .22, you ain't a'gonna hit him with your .357. ;)

LEANWOLF.

I BEG YOUR PARDON..apparently you haven't shot to many 22 semi's with a 1"barrel...... You'd be lucky to hit the side of a barn muchless someones head.

A 22 is no more then a face gun. Stick in someones face and pull the trigger as many times as you can..

And yes I will hit him in the head with a 357 or my 45.

So don't try and tell me a saturday nite special. is going to shoot as accurate as well made large caliber

You only had a .22.
Well, you had a chance. That's better then 99 to 100% of the rest of the people having dinner.
I just hope you were still using your other defense. Situational awareness.

well, it beats just having your fork to poke with. How many ft\lbs are there behind a projectile not-so-sharp buffet dinner knife? Not so good. :p

I'd feel just as comfortable with 10 RELIABLE .22's as with 5 .38's. Problem is, i don't find any .22LR ammo to be reliable enough to rely on in a semiauto. I don't know of ANYONE who is going to volunteer to be shot 10 times COM with any round, and a .22lr will kill someone as dead as a .38 will. Especially 10 of them. I mean really, do you think you're carrying a pellet gun or something? if you're sitting at dinner and need to shoot someone you're not going to need a scoped .357mag with a 6 inch barrel to hit them, because they're going to be standing right there in the restaurant shooting people a few feet away from you. If they aren't, you aren't in danger and can simply distance yourself from the shooter (wherever they are rather than near you).

Neither have I. You have a .22 semi-auto with a 1" barrel??? What gun is that? I want one! :)
Of the dozens of .22, .25, .32, & .380 semi-auto mouseguns I own, only one has a barrel shorter than 2.4" (Astra 2000 .22 Short 2.25").
The only mouse gun I own with anything close to 1" is a 1 1/8" NAA revolver.

Someone already mentioned the first thing that I also thought when reading the original post; What did you do before you started carrying? Did you live in constant fear every time you walked out your door? It's good to be armed and aware, but you are more likely to be struck by lightning than encounter an AK-wielding crazy in Hometown Buffet .... Waffle House maybe. ;)

Someone also mentioned the suspect reliability of rimfires. I have never in thousands of rounds had a CCI Mini-Mag fail to go bang. Not that I prefer a .22LR for carry over anything else, it's just that there are reliable rimfire cartridges in the 21st century.

BOOM BOOM, sounds like you need an LCP or a P3AT to put on the shelf instead of the .22.

It is a well known fact that Ohio "hometown buffets" are exceedingly dangerous! How you made it back in onc piece is beyond me. Next time you go to such a haven of low-lifes, you should consider a sawed-off-shotgun/lever action rifle hidden in a trench coat.

And if you go to any of those nefarious libraries...make sure you have back up in the car and good commo!

the smiley leanwolf put in there was an indicator of sarcasm, you might want to revise your response to where it is less biting.

But anyway....

Gun is always better than no gun, and when it comes down to it, you are either lucky or you aren't, might as well go down fighting!

For some reason I thought this was going to be an action thred instead of a what if... Gecko45 would have jumped in with all his Mall Ninjaness and saved the day. Seriously I understand how you want to be prepared but if you were that rushed to take 10 more seconds to slap on a holster I have no pitty nor do I think its an excuse. How can anyone be in a rush to go to hometown buffet? Sorry dont mean to be a jerk but this is a non issue!

I maintain a 22 pistol is one of the most dangerous weapons ever made.

Look what Sarah Brady has done with one.
