I am looking for some recommendations on binoculars for use at the range (.22 holes are hard to see past 25 yards) and on the trail while backpacking. As such, they need to be compact and relatively light. I have a budget of $200 to $250. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Agreed with respect to the birders. They pay attention to a lot of details we don't with respect to optics - all of which will make for a better view.

I've got a pair of Eagle optics binos - given to me as a gift by a birder - that have served me well for years. I think they were just under $200 10 years ago. Vortex also makes good binos at your pricepoint.

Eagle optics and vortex are sister companies.
I would also consider the nitrex binoculars Natchez is clearing out. I have been impressed with their scopes. I also have a pair of 10x25 Nikon atbs I have been meaning to sell. Never use them any more.

if I had 250 bucks to spend id pick up a set of Nikon monarch 5 atbs. I have a set for a back up set that mostly stays at camp to watch deer out the window. I shake my head every time I use them that you can get that good of glass for that little outlay of money. Truth be told there probably good enough for any purpose I use binoculars for.

Check out the Nikon offerings .
Very reasonable in price and the stuff is really what the average guy needs in a glass!
I own 'em, I love 'em!

If you are looking for .22 holes at 50 yds., you might need a 10X. In your price range a good glass is going to be a crap shoot. Good luck.
