It was if you like Rugers, and they're easy to tell apart from those made before or after '76. since they bear a rollmark along the lines of "Made in the Bi-centenial year of our nation's founding" (if this is incorrect, it's my memory's fault and the gist is the same)
it says "made in the 200th year of american liberty"
mine is a 1965 94 winchester since ya gotta have a winchester thudy-thudy
my daughter has the cool birth gun smith 625 model of 1989 BTW her b-day is june 25

thanks, it's been 6 years since I last had a '76 production ruger "in hand" so i knew i was likely to be off a bit...

I bought my first SKS, a Russian TULA, specifically because it was made the same year I was (1954). I thought it was cool that we grew up on opposite sides of the iron curtain and ended up together.

Haven't stumbled across anything else that I knew for a fact shared my year of birth.

Hey, on this note...
My grandpa was born in 1917 and just turned 90. He's always been a shooter and I'd like to get him something nice along the "birth year" topic. Any ideas? He can't handle any really hard recoiling calibers now but it would be nice to get him a gun he can appreciate and shoot a little.
I'm sure there were some great weapons made back then. He customized a springfield 1903a3 for my Dad when he was 12 that is a tack driver and has taken more deer than who knows.

I would say a P-17 would be in order.

You could search for "p-17" on www.gunbroker.com or search the gunshows. Recoil of a 30 Cal might be tough for someone who is 90 though.
