I have avoided AR 10 platform for many years now, preferring M-14 and FN Fal rifles I have worked with over the years after campaigning a custom HK91 from the early 80s in early practical rifle competitions.
But a couple weeks ago I found a LGS was selling these Aero M5 enhanced built lowers for $150 because of the California intimidation factor - no body is building ARs ! So I am taking it to my son's, and soon to be my residence , in Oregon :) , and have ordered the following to be sent there: M5 e1 enhanced upper receiver with a 15" M lok enhanced float fore end , an Aero .308 buffer tube ensemble , a Criterion 18.5" stainless Lightweight barrel DPMS pattern, an Aero Nickle Boron BCG and a JP adjustable gasblock and JP flash hider. I havent decided what stock to put on it yet.
I want to keep the weight down to the 7 pound or less range unscoped as this is a hunting weapon. I think I will put my Leupold VXR firedot 2-7 on it . I needed this like a hole in my head but my better heeled Dr. son will buy it from me when I get too old to use it :) Pictures FROM OREGON WHERE IT IS LEGAL shall follow in about a month.

I went through four or five AR-10 type rifles before I ended up with a SCAR-17. I'd take either the SCAR or AR-10 over an M1-A or HK for ergonomics ansnaccuracy. Good luck with your build. 7lbs is gonna be a hard mark to reach, but nothing wrong with trying.

Should be nice.

Be patient with it. There is not the same level of standardization within the AR-10 platform as there is with the AR-15, so an AR-10 build is not a Tinkertoy proposition. I have never built an AR-10, but a good friend has been building them since he was 18. He found enough variation in the parts - sometimes even parts from the same supplier - that some just wouldn't work with other parts and some that would work required hand fitting.

Good luck.

I have heard the same. That's the biggest reason why I haven't jumped on the AR10 wagon. I have been thinking about picking up a complete factory rifle but can't decide which one.
Your build sounds like a winner.

Well from the top: I have 3 AKs; an old Bulgy from the 90s and two Hungarians from the 80s , one a folder and the other set up with an Aimpoint and an Ultimak rail that I extensively trained with after 9,11 hoping they would take old guys :) I would take a good AK, and mine are good being selected from the 13 I once had before 1999 , in CQB anytime. But I can beat my times on courses and take the head shot at 200 meters with one of my now tricked out ARs on moving courses of fire with less misses. The .308s are of course battle rifles , I envision this one as a hunting gun I carry with me in my Truck in Oregon as I travel around it extensively this summer and fall helping my son on his new venture. My son has a lathe and mill and makes a pretty decent lower with them. :) in case some parts need massaging other than my polishing. My guns are pretty slick :) I am shooting for under 9 pounds loaded with 20 rounds and that VXR 2-7 in the super lightweight Aero gooseneck. If I put any back up sights on it it will get plastic Magpuls .

I sacrificed the DPMS Panther 308 on top when I built my 6.5 Creedmoor on a Spikes Jack 308 receiver.

View attachment 776531 I go for those M&P 10's. Here we have an 18" rifle which is much lighter and more nimble than my 16" AR10(T)Armalite.
They have pretty much one goal: pack light and hit hard. They do this quite well.
My optics are Leupold VX2 2-7X 32 , American Defense 1" aluminum quick detach mount.
Trigger is a Geissele SSA-E.
Stock is a Magpul CTR.
Handguards are Smith because they are the lightest available.
I don't think even a squirrel is safe at 200m. Maybe a grasshopper, but not a big one.
