Black Hills 55 grain .223 for home defense?

The soft 55 Gr bullet comes to pieces at up close velocites if it strikes anything remotely resistant.

That is why it does not penetrate water well also. I know we have all seen that on "Mythbusters"
 
I would never use hard ball/fmj for HD. The risk of over penetration is just too great. As others have said, use Hornady TAP or V-Max
 
i've got mine loaded up with m855 green tip for the BGs with body armor.
just kidding, it's loaded with some federal 55gr hp. good enough for me.

Myth, we've covered this already.

Just for reference, it depends on the FMJ. Wolf FMJ for example uses a thicker jacket and it does not fragment. So all 55gr FMJ does not behave the same as M193 (and even M193 exits its target before yawing around 25% of the time according to Fackler).

On the other hand, match rounds seem to behave very consistently in their tumbling and yawing, so you might not see the same thing with Black Hills.
