In many threads I've read, people report that "black powder is rare around here." Just want to point out that as a controlled substance (an explosive), it is rarely out on the shelves where you can see it. If one looked around where I live in PA, it would not appear that anyone carries black powder. BUT ... if you ASK, you find that a number of gun stores carry black powder, stored somewhere in the back room in a vault or other secure storage area. So ya gotta ASK!

Further, if you can get a couple folks together, black powder can be ordered pretty inexpensively directly from Powder Inc. Another guy and I recently split an order for 25 pounds of GOEX in various granulations and paid just under $14 per pound delivered. That's a whole lot less than some of the local gun stores charge for a pound of powder!

So before you conclude that "nobody around here carries black powder" because you haven't seen it on the shelves, make a few phone calls and ASK! You might be surprised.

(Maybe this bit of trivia should be added to the Black Powder Essentials sticky?)

Yes, you are right. I really laugh when I read "I can't find any powder here"
I have found it for them in the same town they say they have been looking.
I think the ones who can't seem to find it really don't want to use it in the
first place. When I found it for them, they just ignore you. So let them use
their inferior subs. There shooting repical guns anyway , so use repical powder. I'm done with it. They say you can lead a horse to water, but you
can't make him drink.

I have been unable to find it in NE AR, but I travelled through the central part of the state earlier this week and bought a couple of pounds of Swiss. I have actively searched for it in my part of the woods with no avail. If anyone knows of a place, I would like to know.

or go on goex website ask them who they sell to. i did that once. they gave me names of distributors out in my area. i then called them up asked who they sold to then i went to a local gun shop gave the guy the person i spoke with they made a powder order and i got my powder.

I've found that BP is very easy to order from PowderInc. I'd rather order 10 pounds from them, than to buy subs.

Ditto on all the above

I have to agree with all of the above. Its my belief that if you were to hand the real black to those that claim it can not be found, they would find a reason not use it.

Maybe there are those who want an excuse NOT to use the holy black. However, my point in starting the thread was to get something out there, especially for newbies (I was one not too long ago), so they know HOW to look for black powder.

When I first got started, I couldn't find it, either. I was at a Gander Mountain, couldn't find any, so asked a guy behind the counter if he knew anybody that carried it. I was surprised to learn that they did; it just wasn't on the shelves. Next time I was at my LGS I asked about black powder, and surprise surprise, they had it, too. But you'd have never known. All kinds of smokeless and BP substitutes on the shelves, but the BP was "in the back."

Had I not stumbled upon it and then been informed it is kept secured because it is controlled, I might still be looking, too.
