In many threads I've read, people report that "black powder is rare around here." Just want to point out that as a controlled substance (an explosive), it is rarely out on the shelves where you can see it. If one looked around where I live in PA, it would not appear that anyone carries black powder. BUT ... if you ASK, you find that a number of gun stores carry black powder, stored somewhere in the back room in a vault or other secure storage area. So ya gotta ASK!
Further, if you can get a couple folks together, black powder can be ordered pretty inexpensively directly from Powder Inc. Another guy and I recently split an order for 25 pounds of GOEX in various granulations and paid just under $14 per pound delivered. That's a whole lot less than some of the local gun stores charge for a pound of powder!
So before you conclude that "nobody around here carries black powder" because you haven't seen it on the shelves, make a few phone calls and ASK! You might be surprised.
(Maybe this bit of trivia should be added to the Black Powder Essentials sticky?)
