Blackmag Introduces "Flash" Pan Powder

Colebrook, New Hampshire- BlackMag Industries of Colebrook, New Hampshire, makers of BlackMagXP muzzleloader propellant, a proven blackpowder replacement propellant, has introduced a new product to their powder line.

Called "FLASH," the new powder is the first blackpowder replacement specifically designed for the flash pan in flintlock muzzleloaders. Like BlackMag XP, "Flash" is non-hygroscopic, is moisture resistant and is actually recoverable after exposure to moisture, has a low ignition temperature to ensure faster, sure-fire ignitions and is non-fouling, is non corrosive, non-toxic and biodegradeable. The granulation size of "Flash," 40 to 50 microns in size, is comparable to FFFG blackpowder and is designed to optimize ignition in both old and new style flintlock flash pans with varying flash hole sizes. "Flash" is designed solely as a priming powder in flintlock muzzleloaders, and should not be used in the bore as a primary charge.

"We realize in today's muzzleloading market the number of flintlocks used is comparatively small," says Craig Sanborn, President and CEO of BlackMag Industries. "But it is an important and dedicated fraternity, and with blackpowder becoming increasingly difficult to find we wanted to provide a reliable and viable alternative."

The new "Flash" powder will be packaged in convenient 150-grain, waterproof speed loaders designed for field application.

Somehow I don't see this replacing Swiss Null B. Which is 7Fg equivalent.

If this powder works it will be a popular and much needed item. None of my local gun sellers stock real black powder. FFF Goex is good stuff and can be purchased at a reasonable price in 10lb quantities online. But 10lbs of FFFF?? That's a 3 lifetime supply for priming.

This stuff is VERY expensive...$30 for 10 ozs., which works out to $48/lb.!!!

But isn't the issue the higher ignition temperature of the substitute powders as the main charge? Unless this material generates a much higher temperature than black powder, I don't see where it is going to help touch off the main charge.

In Sweden we have to pay about 42$ for a can of Pyrodex, last time I bought some. That's expensive too But then again, other people have to make a living also.

its a gimmick. black mag already comes in a FFFg granulation correct? then its simply a relabel of an existing product.

alot of people already have fine work with FFFg bp. thats alot more flammable then the substitutes. as the medieval chemists discovered, more sulfur means lower ignition temp is required.

Sounds fine until you look at the price! A 150 grain tube works out to $38.00 after the hazmat fee and shipping. And at 8.95 for 150 grains--that comes to $417 per pound! I'll stick with the FFF Goex for now. Ten pounds are 169.00 online, with no hazmat fee and free shipping. And I wouldn't be surprised if it can be bought for even less, somewhere on the web. Unfortunately, none of my local stores carry it. Just BP substitutes.

ordered some- gonna try it- I am mainly a "real bp" user- not into fake alternatives- but heck- if the "administration" ever decides to cut off the supply of real BP
we just might need an alternative...
