Blade I need.

Why does it need to be assisted opening? I personaly think the time difference betweed a thumb stud knife and an assisted opener is negligable. There are lots of 4.5"+ folding knives for less than a hundred bucks that are capable of any knife type task, but I can't think of one with assisted opening. If you can live without that feature, I reccomend SOG's 5" bladed Pentagon Elite. Cold Steel also has some nice longer bladed knives for reasonable prices, and so does spyderco, but I don't believe any of those feature assisted opening.

If you look around, you might find a Darrel Ralph knife that falls within your parameters, but I doubt it will happen for less than 250. Other than that, I'm out of ideas.

Strong and assisted opening don't go together usually. Folks that are interested in building strong folders don't build AOs.

Please explain the application so I've got a better idea how to help.

What about something from the Kershaw line? They make some robust assisted openers. Or perhaps a Camillus with their "Robo" assist mechanism? Both companies have pieces in the under $250 range.

I just like assisted opening. But your right, it is not that big of deal. I carry an MOD Hornet, but it is too small. I have a straight knife but it is to big and not legal to carry concealed.

I am going to carry it while hiking. I have no CCW permit. Also at the K-9 center I work at www.cooperhaus.com.

I want the best defensive knife I can buy for my budget. I would like to buy a custom knife. But my bills, kid, car, will not let me.

Thanks guys, I dont have a clue.

Emerson Waved Commander - fastest opening knife you'll find with no assisted opener. The Wave is a great feature.

I am going to carry it while hiking.

Ok, let's clarify the situation some more. You intend to carry it hiking. If so a small fixed blade is all you need. Do you also intend to carry it day to day? Do you want it to be a defensive weapon as well as a tool? What's the max price you can put into it?

I love assists too! I've got customs and productions. Heck, I was talking on the phone to Ken Onion before going to the Blade Show. Butch Vallotton and Blackie Collins too. But, assists are cool alternatives to autos or manual openers and not any real improvement. IF you want a dead nuts strong folder the best available is one of the Sebenzas. Next are knives with a version of the Axis lock. If you want the strongest knife possible then get a 4 in. fixed blade. If you want the biggest folder you can carry in Cali then get a Camillus Max.

The problem is that there is no one best knife. You have to decide what it needs to do for you and pick accordingly.

If you don't mind going a little bigger, the Cuda Maxx has the "Quik-Flik" which basically just means small guard/flippers and a massive blade that doesn't take much to open. It's basically the same as using the flippers on the assisted opening Kershaws like the Bump or the other Onion designs, but there's no assisted-opening mechanism--the mass of the blade is your assist. Once the blade starts moving, momentum does the rest.

It's a strong one, too. However, the blade is actually 5.5 inches and the grip is longer.

All purpose knife. Defense, opening dog food bags, hiking. etc. I looked up all the ones you guys have said.

Now my brain hurts. There are a lot of knives out there. I mean a lot! The Cuda is very cool. The knives the THR member makes are really cool. Sebenzas are really pricey. The micro techs are sexy. This is hard. :uhoh:

Yep, if you open your options to custom stuff plus all the other knives available it becomes very difficult to choose. The folders I own are Strider, Emerson and Case.

Fixed blades, well the sky IS the limit on those. :) Mine are pretty well priced I think since most are under $200, and you can easily get into thousands of $.

How about the Benchmade Ruckus?

Another excellent knife - I was thinking of that while recommending the Commander.
