Blank gun for self defense?!

Hi!

I am from Hungary, Europe. In my country firearms are banned for self defense except "gas guns" which are blank guns with CS-gas or Pepper cartridges. They are effective non-lethal weapons from 3 to 5 meters range.

I would be interested about others' experience with similar defence weapons...

In the United States we are fortunate to generally have the right to have firearms for self-defense, but not always. But here those that carry pepper-spray or similar chemical weapons get them in small cans that spray the contents rather then in the form of a pistol. Under ideal circumstances they work if the attacker is very close, but if this is the way it is and they have a more serious weapon, such as a knife, you can be badly hurt or killed. On the other hand I have used pepper-spray against a dog that came after me, and it worked fine. I was never bothered by that dog again.

I don't know how you're laws work, and I would never suggest that you should break them, but if it is possible I would consider carrying a knife or dagger as well as the kind of pistol you have in mind.

In Hungary only law enforcement guys can have a real gun (and hunters or target shooters of course).
Our gun-law.... no comment.
This is a great step that we can carry gas-guns at all. In the communism this was forbidden too.
By the way: this guns more powerful than a pepper-spray (which are legal to carry as well), becouse the propellant not pressured gas, but the exploding gunpowder, and one gas cartridge contains as much active agent as a whole can of spray.

Knife: It would be legally O.K. but I am too slow to use one

And firearms are not banned in Hungary, but CCW for a handgun for selfdefence is only on discriminating basis. (Szoval a rendorseg szabad merlegelesi jogkoreben fogja elutasitani a kerlemedet.)

De azert nekunk kifele is illene helyesen interpretalni a magyar jogszabalyokat, pl. a 8 cm-es limitet a kes hosszaban.

Ezek a jambor amerikaiak joreszt azt sem tudjak mi fan terem a gaz-riogato, es aki nem hord .45-ost, az nem is ferfi.)

Németül sajnos egy kukkot se tudok, de a képeket szoktam itt nézegetni.

I would think the gas guns could be effective for self-defense, especially if you take the time to practice often.

You may also want to consider ways of using your gas gun as an impact tool. You probably don't actually want to use a revolver-style weapon to hit things with in training, so you may consider making a training gun out of hard plastic, similar in proportion to your gas gun.

You should then practice both shots and using the training model as an impact weapon, in case your gas is not effective. Using your "gun" to hit is much safer for many reasons than using a knife, and has the advantage of already being in your hand.

JShirley: that's a good thought to use a gas gun as an impact tool, although I would prefer not to be engaged in a close range fight if possible
