bobcats not quite in the wild.

jmorris, put out a box trap, catch em, pop them with a .22, and i will buy em from ya ;) nice brush cats

any furred critter around here (in area where i live) is dead real quick. people here care more about the MEAT than the FUR, which is what i want (im a taxidermist)

It's Bobcats, not tigers. Pretty harmless for the most part. We have one that comes around looking for a hand out at times. I'm more concerned about yotes and wolves.

Bobcats r NOT harmless, didn't i just read a post about one that was hanging out on someone's deck, just b/c they wanted to attack someone's LABRADOR RETRIVER!
Those are NOT small dogs either, btw!

I really don't think ANY wild animal is safe, except for the little ones, like rabbits, squirrels & birds! I've just been around enough wild animals to KNOW they ARE wild!

Even one time I was jogging, I saw a wild hawk come swooping down right AT me!
I guess he thought I was small prey, but when he got close, saw I was a human and too large for him to take on!
Was pretty frightening, but wild animals DO attack other animals! Your bobcats that come looking for a handout, have obviously been fed before by other humans, and so are becoming USED to humans!

Doesn't mean though they won't one day, decide to resort to their wild nature and attack one of your pets!

I truly think we've let TOO many wild animals get close to civilization, and it's putting us at risk!
Well I like animals too, but if they are WILD, let them BE in the WILD, not our backyards!

I've grown up arouind wildlife, and quite simply cannot fathom this unfounded fear iveseenenufdeer seemingly has acquired. I grew up among deer, bobcats, coyotes, mountain lions, skunks, coons, even those crazy hawks () and whatever the wilds of South Dakota have to offer (even see the occasional elk) and not once have I feared for my life or safety. The only animal that truely frightens me is the prairie rattler. I just can't understand someone who seemingly is afraid of the nature that surrounds them. Between this post and the deer feeding thread, I just can't imagine living in this woman's shoes. Seeing 10 point bucks fight in the yard is somehting to appreciate, not fear. Once you learn nature isn't always after YOU, you'll be a whole lot more comfortable in the woods...or even your own yard, as may be the case.

I wonder why Bobcats arent bred with domesticated cats to create a hybrid like the bengal. Is it a Genus or a Species problem? They have wolf and domestic dog hybrids or even Tiger and Lion hybrids so i figure a bobcat/domestic hybrid wouldnt be too far off? but bobcats are pretty cool looking animals
.

Such crosses DO exist. We had a problem with our "barn cats" being ate by coyotes, which led to increases in the mice population and whatnot.. WE mentioned this to some friends, and they said they had just the thing...sure enough, they showed up with some bobcat/housecat crosses....they lived along a major river drainage that was teeming with bobcats, and on more than one occasion, had kittens with definite bobcat genes. The ones we had were 2nd or 3rd generations of the orignal cross, but still had tufted ears and whatnot. After acquiring these cats, our depredation problems ceased. Watching my dog attack one of them, it was readily appearent WHY....the dog chased the cat into some high weeds, and sudenly, there was some hisses, some barks, some whining, and eventually, the dog came out of the weed patch....with a cat firmly latched on to its back, giving him hell. The dog eventually shook the cat, and all was well, but the dog learned a lesson, and we learned why we were able to keep cats around finally!

I've seen bobcats in my yard on multiple occasions. This one was hunting squirrels. As the squirrel came down the fence, the bobcat jumped for it. I was surprised when he actually missed it.

That's a great picture of mama bobcat and her four kits! :)

There have been many instances of cross-breeding with domestic cats. Some of it has been done on purpose. The "Pixie-Bob" was claimed to be part bobcat but this is currently being debated. So far no one has proven that Pixie-Bobs have bobcat genetic markers. There's a good article about domestic and wild cat cross-breeding here: http://www.messybeast.com/small-hybrids/rufus-lynx-hybrids.htm

My dad is more than glad to have them around. He's tired of shooting and traping the rabbits. I think he needs a heard of them to put much of a dent in the population. Would you buy the rabbits:)

once the rabbits, squirrels, neighborhood small dogs and cats are all gone, he might change his mind :D :D

Rum Runner,

Cats are TERRIBLE for local animal populations. They eat anything. Rabbits are destructive too.

I'd rather have a bobcat stop the cat and rabbit population from getting too bad. There needs to be some checks and balances when it comes to such species.

It's in plano almost to frisco.
We're over by lake Lavon and over run with rabbits. I think I would prefer a few cats. The hawks are just not doing their job over here...

NICE pics!

thats what traps are for :D

In high school, I briefly dated a young woman whose family had raised a bobcat from a cub and it was as docile as a housecat (though, judging by the behavior of Spartacus, my little buddy, that's not so docile).

That was one big cat. I remember thinking he could turn my arms to ribbons if I petted him wrong. He ate normal cat food but at night was let out of the house and I am sure he ate more than his share of squirrels.

My almost 8 year old niece was playing with her new phone (I know) and caught one of the pups walking by her play area, so she sent me the photo.
