but I believe mine fell over in the closet in its thin soft case around the time of his passing as it shoot about 8" right at 50 yds (still trying to figure how to correct this without putting scope mounting holes in the gun or replacing sights that show no obvious damage). I still love this gun, and have learned to compensate very well for the sight in the mean time.

jrfoxx, Do you have a boresighter? They're not expensive. If you boresight it, I think it'll give you a better idea of what needs adjusting how. Short of that, it sounds to me like the front sight may be rocked over to the left. Not knowing the minute particulars of your gun, you might have to index your front sight to the right to bring POI back to center. If it takes more than that, see a gunsmith about correction short of scoping it.

Editted to note: I said the above with the assumption that the front sight could be knocked over, but it could be the rear sight, in which case a later post is in fact right. That said, I still recommend having a boresighter on hand to know for sure.

Mine has that side mount. I've got a couple of spitzer loads I'm thinking out. One's a 147gr BT.

I load the 150 grain Nosler ballistic tip now days for my Contender to around 2150 fps and it's deadly on deer, plenty of expansion. Loading some of the other spitzer bullets to .30-30 is dicey because they may or may not expand at those velocities. They're designed for 06/.308 velocities. The Nosler WILL expand at lower velocities than the .30-30 produces and it's a boat tail bullet with a good BC.

Also, Sierra has the 135 grain spitzer game king known as a "pistol bullet". It's designed specifically for the .30-30 in 10 and 14" contenders for deer hunting. I shoot that one in 7.62x39 and it works well on deer, accurate bullet. I'd prefer the Nosler BT for the 340, though. A high BC bullet like the Nosler makes the .30-30 a 300 yard deer gitter and if you have a scope on that 340, mine was a MOA gun. Amazing, a little cheap .30-30 turn bolt could shoot FACTORY ammo and was near MOA. I couldn't find a load that thing didn't like far as accuracy goes. I think the .30-30 is just an inherently accurate round, despite the reputation it seems to have with some folks. I've heard all sorts of crud over the years about how inaccurate the .30-30 is, yet, the guns I've fired from 94 Winchesters to 336 Marlins, to my 340 to my contender were all deadly accurate, amazingly accurate in some cases. Just shows you how full of it some folks are.

788 30 30

I HAVE A 788 REM. IN 30/30 I THINK THE PREVIOUS OWNER MUST HAVE SHOT A LOT OF CAST LOADS . IT HAS A SLIGHT RING IN THE CHAMBER

Now you have me jealous...I will have to post up a pic of mine tonight. :)

I have been working on the 147 BTFMJ's and some Nozzler 125's with RL-7.

Has anyone had any trouble with tight chambers in the neck area with their 340's?

D

A couple of photos of mine. I re-did the stock myself, and replaced the nearly opaque, ancient scope with a new Bushnell. Sacrilige? Nah. I want to eventually kill a deer with this one, for sentimental reasons.

Bolt Action 30-30's

I have 2 Rem. 788's in 30-30. They are both scoped, no sights and are used exclusively for cast bullets. They are as near to perfect cast bullet rifles as I can find. Finding spare mags for them is getting tough but I have a couple for each rifle so I'm OK. Mine are great shooters and I just love them. Never let them go!!! I load more 30-30 than any other 30 cal.. The only rifle cartridge that I load more of is 223. :)

Here is my little sweetie.

I get more happy that I got it every time I take it out to go shooting.

Just thinking about somthing here...I wonder what the makers of these rifles and that cartridge in particular would say if they could see us now, bragging about these sweeties.

And then imagine the gun-rags that keep condeming the 30 WCF as a poor third or worse to most of the more powerful cartridges out in circulation nowadays...gnashing their teeth due to us not listening to their advice. :p

I personally love it. :D

JRFOXX, your rear sight is mounted in a dovetail, you adjust the windage by drifting it right or left in the dovetail. In your case, to the left. Use a hammer, a brass rod, and light taps.
The serial number on mine is on the receiver ring, on the right, just behind the barrel nut.
Oh, by the way, not only is mine set up with a scope mount, it also has gen-u-wine impressed checkering ! Regards

My retired neighbor is a gun show fanatic. Every time he goes, he buys something. He got a Savage bolt .30-30 about 6-7 years ago. Not sure of model, but it's a nice little gun.

jrfoxx,

While others may not agree, your rifle is a classic and would be worth a trip to the gunsmith to correct the sighting issue if you can't determine the cause. If you reload and use pointed bullets you can really wring out all the potential of the 30-30 round.

I have an H&R Mod 157 which is a single shot 30-30 and prefer it over a lever action repeater. Can load it nearly as fast as a lever action and can shoot those pointy bullets too.:D

This is too funny!

I talked of this in another post. This is THE rifle I had at my side, working on my car, when 2 BGs decided they wanted to enter the house and assault me. One spotted the little .30-30 bolt action resting against (touching) my leg and nudged his bud. They booked out, got into the car they alleged would not run, and made tracks out of Dodge! It was my grandfather's now my older brother owns it. I would love to have one.
