What is the proper way to clean a Bore Snake? I just picked up one for my 9mm pistols and one for my .45ACP pistols. I want to ensure I clean them properly so when I clean my firearms the next time, I won't be using a dirty Bore Snake.

What cleaning technique do you use for your Bore Snakes?

I think the op means how to clean the cleaning device once youre done cleaning the gun. I just use dish soap and hot water, then hang it up to dry.

IIRC, the package says you can run them through the washing machine with a little soap, no bleach or other stuff and let them air dry over a hanger.

I have 2 each for .30 and .223 as well as 12 ga. and .45 then I run them as a batch in the washer after a few uses when they start to get really ugly. Does a pretty good job.

Unless you live alone or are wanting to, I wouldn't use momma's washing machine - a small bucket with some Dawn liquid dish soap - not some cheap substitute - use the Dawn, cuts the grease and grime out - in hot water, swishing it around for a few minutes, rinse and hang to dry

Agree with oneounce load.

Dawn is wonderful on grease. It's what they use to clean wildlife who have gotten oil on them from the oil spills.

Anyhow, I also use the bucket and Dawn method ~ uses less water and keeps grease/oil out of the washing machine.

Yeah, I don't use the clothes washer either. The old blister hassled me about a lot of things so I sent her packing. Much happier now that I'm a single guy.

I dunno... The boresnake residue in the washing machine is nothing compared to the stuff left behind after putting raw coyote hides in the commercial machine with two or three scoops of detergent. Takes the loose flesh and fat off, washes out the burrs and bugs pretty good....

The dryer does a great job of softening the pelt too...

I'm sure it cleans the snake just fine. The clothes you run after? Not so much.

well im sure as hell not washing it with my Sunday best and fine linens...

i toss mine in when i do old Tshirts and underpants....however ive yet to notice any ruined clothing

Go ahead and use the washing machine.

Run the Bore Snakes by themselves, or with a few garage towels, then just run an empty load with just a little detergent and (in my case I have a well), some iron Out)

Never had a problem.

Some of you guys must have some really filthy bore-snakes. :D

I'm sure there isn't nearly as much gunk and oil on a bore-snake as there is on my clothes after I work on my cars or motorcycle.

As mentioned don't wash them with your delicates and finest whites but nothing terrible is gonna happen if you toss it in the washer with your grungies and casual wear.

And remember that what mama don't know won't hurt her. :D

I would think lead salts would be the larger problem. Leftovers from the priming compounds. Especially hazardous if you have children.

But then it your washer, your family.

And remember that what mama don't know won't hurt her

That sounds like a good close relationship.

Thanks for the input everyone! I will stick to the bucket of Dawn method as opposed to the washing machine.

On a side note, I have BreakFree CLP and Hoppes #9 solvent. What would be the best way to effectively clean the bore using these products?

I was thinking of spraying the bore with CLP, letting it sit for 10 mins, then running a dry patch through the bore. Follow up with the Bore Snake with a some #9 before the brushes, run that through and be good to go?

I put mine in a half-gallon jar with warm water, add dishwashing soap, and shake it like hell. I then drain it, fill it with clean water, and repeat the shake. Repeat a couple of rinses and I am done.
