Dicks Sporting Goods had a 10 gun cabinet on sale for $80. I picked one up since I have been stashing my guns under the bed (2 handguns, 3 long guns).

I move around a lot so I didnt want to get a heavy duty bank vault of a gun safe, a true gun safe, this would be more of an organized way to stash my guns.

Question: what is the best way to keep the humidity out of the cabinet? It's made of steel, but not any sort of super thick steel.

I've had a similar 10-gun cabinet for 15 yrs and have moved it with my family to 3 homes.

The humidity concern relates to numerous factors:
-- is humidity high in your area?
-- do you have central air conditioning?
-- is cabinet installed on concrete or an uninsulated exterior wall?
-- is cabinet in a bath, laundry, or kitchen where moisture is produced?

My cabinet has been installed on framed floors/walls (never on concrete) and I've had no problem with humidity here in the south.

If you do decide to get a Golden-Rod, look at the installation guidelines to assure that it will perform as expected.

a question

I have a gunvault for handgun quick access at night. Is ther a similar product for a long gun? i would love to have quick access to myMossberg shotgun. maybe a small gun cabinet like that decribed above or something to go under the bed for nighttime storage? It would need a quick access lock as I have small kids. thnx.

There's nothing quicker than hiding your shotgun on the front wall of the inside of your bedroom closet. For even better concealability, you could install a coathook just above it and hang you robe on it. Slim chance that anyone would ever guess that it's there and it is ready instantly.

Sometimes, the best security is having it where no one knows where it's at.

yes, high humidity summers here in the DC area where I live. Yes I have central AC. Cabinet will be installed in the upstairs of my home, probably tucked away in a closet since it isn't that big.

I'm in the same situation with little kids and still needing quick access at night. Does your gunvault use a key - I was thinking biometric but I'm not sure. I would also like to have one for a side by side 12 I keep for my wife to use for home defense.

Sernv99, can you possibly find a link/photo of it?

I have a Dick's near and would like to go check if they have the same deal if it looks like it would solve my problem.

I'm sure it's better than my "bicycle chain through the handles of hard cases and trigger gaurds of other guns then through some cinder blocks" solution.

Albeit, it would probably be easier to steal a lighter safe than this unwieldy chain of heavy objects. :)

If it's the Stack On kind of cabinet they have, I would expect the humidity inside to be similar to the outside wherever you keep it.

Hi Pyle,

No I have the regular $99 gunvault. It has 2 quick turn keys- one is locked up.the other is on my keyring, in my bed room at night and goeswith me to work during the day. It has a programmable touch key combo that you can access without lights or the key. (The key is for backup access if the combo fails for some reason). I didn't get the biometric one- its more money and I can just teach my wife the combo if she needs to access it. So there is no need for a fancier one.

I think I will either get a small gun cabinet right next to the bed or maybe a hardcase for a long gun with some kind of lock on it: lock it in there at night and remove it to the regular gun vault during the day.

Sernv99: I've got one of those myself. Darn good little cabinet for the money. At least it keeps the kids and the honest people out.

how good of a job does it do in keeping out the moisture?

Almost identical installation. Mine was also in an upstairs walk-in closet. You do not need to dehumidify your cabinet. With AC, your entire home is dehumidified.
