Today I attended the second gun show of my life. I did not really intend to buy anything, but rather looked at it as a time to get to know my daughter's fiancé a little better. So at 8:55 AM we were sitting in the parking lot with a lot of other people waiting for the doors to open. We got in, and started looking around. Virtually every person at every table was busy scaring people into buying guns with the dire threat of Hilary being elected. :what: We refused to succumb, but moved along looking and talking. The local gun shop that sponsors the show is always in the basement at the end, right next to the food concession. Of course, they all know me by name. :p I asked if they had any Springfield XD 45 compacts. No, but they had this.

This turned out to be a stainless Colt Gold Cup Series 80, still in its original box, along with a receipt for stuff like a custom trigger job and some other after market add ons. I drooled for a minute or two, figuring Mrs. Plinker would never go for it. But then, I figured, I might as well ask. What's the worst that could happen? :uhoh: I offered up my Sig Sauer SP 2022 in trade if she would allow me to pick up the Colt. She said go ahead!:D

It is on layaway for the next couple of weeks, and the best part is, I am selling my Sig to my daughter's intended. He decided he wanted to buy it on the way home, so it is sort of staying in the family. He had to talk a little faster, since my daughter is a little more parsimonious than my wife, but with some guidance from Dad, he got through it relatively unscathed. I got to fondle my "new" Colt a little while we did the paperwork, and the boy is as jealous as one can be. I told him I would rent it to him on the range.

More to come when I get it home. It looks like it had very few rounds put through it. Either that or it was very well taken care of, or both. Any comments on a piece like this? Things to look for, or look out for? This makes two shows and two .45s purchased at those shows. She may not let me do a third.

Nice find! The Gold Cup National Match is an excellent pistol. I have a few Series 70 and 80s and they all are very accurate and trouble free. I think you did real good, reckon we could get some pictures when you get it home?

One of my favorites

I've had a stainless Colt Series 80 Gold Cup for about 8 years, and it is one of my favorites. I have shot it quite a bit at the range, with good results. Mine has the "tang" grip safety instead of a beavertail, with the corresponding hammer. Right now the gun is at the gunsmith having a Wilson beavertail and commander hammer installed, which should make it more comfortable to shoot. Sometimes the original setup would leave a mark on the web of my hand after 60 or 80 rounds.

Yes the Colt Gold Cup Commander is for real.
The first run of a 1000 (500 blued and 500 stainless) were rollmarked Custom Edition and wore wood stocks while the next 2 runs of 1000 (total of 2000, 1000 blued and 1000 stainless) did not have the Custom Edition rollmark and wore rubber wrap around stocks. Here is a picture of mine and she is a shooter.

:) This is why I'm grounded or she just has to come-along......When I'm selling, she's there to see what her cut will be.....:D

Thanks for the pics guys. I don't have mine yet, but I snagged a picture of one that looks pretty much identical to it. There will definitely be better and more pictures when I get it home.

Apparently the one I am purchasing was part of an estate. The serial number starts out with 051... I will be doing some research on Monday to see if I can find out how old it is. I know it is not ancient (at least, from my perspective), but it is not new either. It just looks like it. The only real wear I could find on it was a scratch under the magazine release and a little bit of dust on the grip.

It is coming with only one magazine. Any suggestions on where to buy some good ones? I have done a fair amount of reading on these since yesterday, and it seems that there are magazines aplenty, but not all are created equal.

Thanks!

Mad Magyar, it was actually her idea that I go, and take the daughter's fiancé with me! I warned her not to be surprised if I came home with a gun. This morning she says to me, I am glad it makes you happy, but don't think you will get to buy a gun every time you want to be happy!

I talked to the folks at Colt today, and apparently my "new" Colt was made in 1986. It is still on layaway, but I am doing some negotiating to get it a little earlier than I had originally anticipated. :D

If anyone is still reading this, I am going to be looking for two things soon, extra magazines, and a .22 conversion kit. If anyone has suggestions, I will be glad to read about them.

Yeah, my oldest daughter was born in 1986 too! I am feeling a little old today. I got to thinking, I got this particular gun as a result of some old guy croaking. He owned it for 21 years. It gave me a little shiver. Will someone be buying it again in 21 years because another old guy croaked? :uhoh: But then again, where I am going, I won't be needing it. :D

I finally bought a Colt Gold Cup Trophy last month...the day before I bought the blued Colt Series 70. Which was about 3 days after I bought the Colt New Agent. Good night! Did I really buy 3 Colts in a week?! Shhh!

You know, I never would have bought that Colt New Agent if Hunter hadn't written that exceptional review. I have to credit Hunter for that.

Anyhow, congrats on your Colt!
