I was in a pawn shop recently, browsing for a pistol for my daughter, and came across a Taurus PT22. I went home and was telling my wife about it and showed her some pictures on the internet. She liked the idea of not having to rack the slide to load it, which she has trouble doing on her Kel-Tec P3-at due to arthritis. So we went and got the Taurus for her. I'll have to look for another pistol for the daughter. Anyway, what is everyone's opinion on the little Taurus. I know that a ,22 isn't the best ccw, but 7 36gr CCI Mini Mag hollow points might just be a good deterrent for whomever is in front of it.

Yeah, if you can get it to work. I really do hope your Taurus PT22 works better than the one we had. Ours jammed at least once out of every magazine full. I'm talking failures to feed, failures to eject, stovepipes, you name it. And we did as the guy in the gun store that sold it to us recommended - we tried several different types and brands of ammo. Some of them worked better than others, but as I said, we couldn't get through one magazine full with any of them without at least one failure to do something.
Never-the-less, I really do mean it - GOOD LUCK with your PT22! They're real nice looking little guns IMO.:)

It will probably run just fine for you. But, if not, there are several helpful videos on youtube addressing common PT22 malfunctions.

Mine was less than reliable, ended up trading it for a Buckmark.
I would recommend the 40 grain RN over the 36 grain HP.

Taurus copied the pop up barrel mouse gun design from the Beretta 21 Bobcat (.22 LR) and Beretta 950 (.25 ACP & .22 Short). I have both and have never had a malfunction with either one. Yeah Beretta's may be a little more $ wise but they are much more reliable. You might also consider a North American Arms .22 Mag Black Widow. They can be had for under $300 and are a very reliable mini revolver.

If you want a pistol with more power Beretta make the 84 series. 380 with the tip up barrel. CDI sales has them

I have one and like it a lot. I'm not dumb enough to stoke a little blowback, heavily-sprung, rimfire pistol with cheap ammo and then complain the gun's a POS when it won't run it. These little guns need quality ammo. I don't stow it for defense, but it is loaded with CCI MiniMag solids. Federal AutoMatch works well in mine, too. Mine was used when I got it, made in 1998, and purchased in 2012. I've had no malfunctions with it.

Incidentally, I also have two of the PT-25 guns, too. One is from 1996 and the other, a stainless, from 2009. The first one has not had any malfunctions but, admittedly, it's only seen maybe fifty rounds. The second one hasn't been fired yet since I got it.

These are guns I picked up simply because they "were there" and well-priced. I wasn't seeking any of them out.

Let's hope this thread stays on the gun and doesn't become one on the caliber. By the way, your magazine is made to hold eight rounds. Add one to the chamber and it's nine rounds on hand, which is better than seven.

While I'm not a fan of Taurus guns, I do like them.

With this being said, I don't know if I'd trust my life to a Taurus gun. If the OP's wife is going to use it for SD, make sure you clean it thoroughly and run some rounds through it.

Picked up mine second hand. Runs well with just about any high velocity ammo I can feed into it. Magazine button spring was a little weak so it would occasionally partially drop the mag. Hope your wife enjoys it and never has to use it

Mine was a horror with many different types of ammo. It would jam and eject entire unfired rounds. Once it was trying to eject an unfired round and slide slammed on it, bending the round. I ditched it. Won't go near one again.

I have a Taurus 22PLY. It's a more updated polymer version of the PT22. Mine has been fantastic. It's accurate and very reliable. I have carried it in occasion with CCI 36gr Mini-mags and don't feel undergunned.

A buddy of mine picked up a PT22. His was horribly unreliable out of the box. LOTS of FTF's. I generally never advocate home gunsmithing on a guns feed ramp but he spent an evening with a box of q-tips and some mother's mag polish making his feed ramp shine. After that, his run ran like a top.
