I bought a 642 today -- one of the newer ones w/ the internal lock. The trigger seems okay -- not like my 19 or 60, but okay anyway. Tough to pass it up at $200 I'll know a 11 days how it shoots
10-Ring - My fiancee has a 642, and she loves it. Hell, I love it. Handles beautifully, fits the hand (hers and mine) well, very pointable. I think you'll be plenty happy with it.
And if not, look me up! I'll give ya a good price!
Yeah, I really didnt' want to experiment w/ this generation of S&W wheelguns w/ these internal locks, but this one crossed my path & I guess I'll give her a spin
Oh don't get me wrong. If I came across a decent condition 642 for $200, I'm quite sure my objection to the lock would have lasted about.. oh.. 0.008 seconds or so. So far I've got the 4 smiths. Models 686 and 66, two of each in varied lengths with no locks. I really would like to give one of those little j frames a shot though myself.
I have noticed that on the rare occasions when the lock does malfunction it's most often in a small-frame revolver shooting especially hot loads. If you are adicted to the more powerful cartridges a drop of blue Loc-Tite in the right place might be a good idea. Otherwise, for the price you couldn't go wrong.
You have sined my son, but the Old Fuff will forgive......
