First pistol to!

I'm in love, after fingering just about everything at the gun store the 1911 and Berrata 92 felt the best to me. Since they didn't have the 92 Inox I wanted I decided to go with a 1911. I went with the Springfield GI Mil-Spec. I really like the Wilson Combat but I'm just not ready to spend $2,500 on a pistol. I'm a big WW2 buff so I liked the GI Mil Spec as soon as I saw it.

Anyway its freaken sweet! I took it to the range right after I bought it and put a couple mags through it just to try it out. I was at a rifle range shooting my Sig, and the closest they let you shoot is 50 yards. So thats what I did with the 1911 and I hit paper, two shots keyholed! I'm going to call that beginners luck.

Quick question, what kind of grease do you guys use on the rails? I used Automatenfett which is the only grease I have, but its not cheap or easy to get so I want to save it for my Swiss rifles.

Oh well maybe I was using the wrong term, two possible three (hard to tell) hits were so close together that I could put my thumb through the target.

"Keyholing" doesn't mean putting shots close together or through the same hole, it means that the bullet is tumbling in the air, and not entering the paper (or whatever the target is) in the normal manner. Usually accuracy is degraded. The telltale sign is that the bullet usually makes oblong holes instead of round holes in the target.

You can use just about anything you want to lube it. The 1911 will want more lube than say a Glock, so don't run it dry especially when new.

I'm currently using Super Lube on the slide, mostly because that is what I have. I also use Break Free CLP (mostly to clean) and Mobil 1 (5W-30), because that is what I use in my car and have spare quarts in the garage. The parkerized finish will soak up oil and provide extra rust protection.

I use the gorilla grease we use on the .50 cal and the mk 19.. just heavy weapon grease. Just a very light coat should make it glide like glass...

Congrats and a choice for your 1st 1911. I use FP10.... run er' wet and shoot the snot out of it.

What about Mobil 1 wheel bearing grease?:D;)

I'll probably pick up some TW-25B, my Sig rifle came with some and it seemed pretty slick.

I noticed the parkerized finish on the slide really doesn't like the CLP cleaner I used on it. I sprayed all the internal parts off to get the factory shipping oil off them. It turned kind of light, so I sprayed CLP oil on it and let it soak in. Now its back to the right color.

I use 100% synthetic wheel bearing grease, Valvoline brand I believe. It pretty much stays the same consistency hot or cold. Cheap compared to specialty gun greases and if it stands up to the abuse wheel bearings take it will sure work in a firearm. It's not that thick, sticky, stuff like the old wheelbearing greases were.

Congrats and great choice!

I use grease on the frame rails, disconnector, and barrel and bushing, and put a drop of CLP at the base of the hammer to lubricate it and the sear.
