This is probably going to sound "noobish" as i'm sure there are a lot of people that post about getting their first gun however I must say I am happy to finally be able to own one.

My friends took me over to Jays Gun Shop in Crestview (that's on the panhandle of Florida) and we looked around a bit, some nice guns for sale including a barrett .50 cal. I bought a new H&K USP full size .45 in black for 853 dollars (after tax) which came with a magazine and case, and filled out the necessary paperwork. Unfortunately Florida has a 3 day wait period so it says I can pick it up next Thursday on the 14th. Rifles you can take home same day. Needless to say my mother approved of it but was not happy as she is afraid of guns, at first she had said I could not even have the gun at home about 2 weeks ago, well I convinced her to allow me to keep the gun in the home and for her to keep the ammo and magazine at my aunts (down the street) until she gains enough trust to allow me to keep the magazine as well. But yeah I'm happy, can't wait to get it on Thursday. My friends are military and have been taking me shooting, teaching me proper safety before I bought my gun and making sure I keep my finger off the trigger.

Congratulations, and welcome to the shooting world.

You picked a fine -- if somewhat pricey -- gun to start out on. HKs are fantastic guns. I'm envious indeed.

Next time something goes bump in the night ask your Mother if you can keep the ammo with the gun in future.
They belong together.

Absolutely, however I did not want to push it. She is already very anti gun as it is and I need to show her i'm responsible. I asked her about it she said try asking her in a couple of months and we'll see.

You did well to get this far, you are under her roof after all.
Congratulations on getting such a fine gun too.
Now practice and get training.

My mom never wanted me to keep our HD handgun loaded. Instead she wanted the magazine kept out of it but not in a different location.:scrutiny:

I would always ask her exactly what is was she was so afraid of.

She also had a habbit of changing its hiding spot and not telling anybody and then not remembering where it was.

Just goes to show that someone can still want a gun for self-defense and still be too afraid of it to actually utilize it effectively.

Buying a NIB H&K is a fine occasion. Sometimes you pay list, sometimes you do not.

If the gun fits and you like it, you're ahead of the game.

When you started with the "snob" comment, I thought you were going to tell us about your new Kimber RCP or Wilson Combat.

I've had a couple H&Ks, and they NEVER had ANY failure of any kind. Except operator-aiming issues.

Fine choice for a first gun! HK makes a great product! Mine is the most accurate, easiest to shoot well firearm I own bar NONE! :D Congrats :D

I did a large amount of research on the USP before purchasing it, also shot one about a year ago and I loved how it felt compared to Glocks. I like Glocks but they just don't really fit in my hand that well compared to the USP. I also liked the recoil reduction.

I have owned a high quality airsoft replica of the USP as well and the replica appears to take down the same way as the real USP as the sales rep wanted to make sure I knew how to take down the gun so I guess it helped a little. I'm still quite amazed by the tests the USP has gone through. Even though it was a pricey purchase, I am confident that the money went towards high quality German engineering at it's finest.

PILMAN,
I suggest you try and convince your mom to go with you and your friends to the shooting range so she can see how safely you conduct yourself while shooting and handling a firearm. That just might boost her confidence in you. Who knows, you just might get her to shoot some day. My son and I go shooting together all the time.

No luck with that, I'm not gonna try to push it on her. She used to go to the shooting range and shoot guns all the time with my father, personal experience has left a bad taste in her mouth a few years ago from a situation. She's afraid of guns because of that.

Congratulations on your purchase. It is a good thing that you are respecting your mother's wishes as her views evolve and avoiding pushing her somewhere she does not want to go.

I agree with the suggestion above about getting some professional training. A professional can teach you in a systematic and organized way - it will make you a better shooter. It also gives you credibility and shows responsibility - shows that you take the responsibility of firearms seriously. I think this is an excellent suggestion. Put yourself in your mother's shoes: if she's nervous about you owning firearms and you say "I'm getting professional instruction in gun safety" this is bound to make a good impression.

Also consider how you are going to secure your gun when not using it, and follow this procedure every time.

Use this as an opportunity to demonstrate your level of responsibility. What you do next and how you handle this opportunity, and how your mother perceives your actions, will determine how she responds the next time you ask her about taking on another adult responsibility (which firearms ownership certainly is).

Pilman;

Congratulation on a fine purchase! My son's in Crestview also, building helicopters. Unfortunately, he's got an XD and really should move up to the H&K. Perhaps he'll see your's at the range & finally see the light.
