I recently picked up a like new SW99 in .45. I love the gun but have noticed that the captured spring guide rod assembly (a fluted polymer rod) bows significantly when the assembly is put into place (and yes, it's in the right slots). Then, when the gun is disassembled, the assembly will just fall out. I know with some guns once the slide is racked the guide rod assembly will come free. That isn't the case with my P99. Is this normally the case with the SW99? Is the bowing of the rod (and springs) a concern? Does anyone make a steel recoil rod assembly for this gun, preferably with a captured spring? Everything seems to be for the 9mm and .40.

I used to own a SW99 in .45 as well. I thought the bowing rod was kinda wierd too. It never caused any problems though.

Enjoy that gun! I loved mine. I only parted with mine cause .45ACP ammo costs were no longer in the budget! I'd like to find a 9mm SW99/P99 AS one day.

I've never looked at the 45 version guiderod - but the guide rod bends a bit in 9mm too. It is straight when out of the gun, though.

It probably shouldn't just fall out of the gun, however. If U are worried, just call S&W and tell them. They'll probably send U one for free.

Thanks guys. I think that I'll give S&W a call as has been recommended.

I think my next buy will be a P99/SW99 compact in .40. I wish there was a
.45 I'm having a very hard time deciding which I like better, my P99 or SW99, other than caliber.

Does anyone see Walther coming out with a P99 in .45?

That's been discussed many times at the Walther forum. There is no market for such an item except in the US - And Walther doesn't seem interested in doing it. So, I doubt we'll ever see a 45 cal P99.

I'd love to see a tactical 5" slide version of the P99 in 9mm. I'd buy it.

1 caution - I am always seeing people complaining about recoil in the 40 cal P99c. I love mine in 9mm, but I wouldn't want one in 40 cal. And, they are actually hard to find in 40 cal (the compact model)

FYI, I just got off the phone with S&W (great folks, BTW) and the guide rod bowing and the assembly dropping out when the gun is stripped is 100% perfectly normal.
