Hi all, I want to start shooting bowling pin match's with a few friends but I have a few of questions:

What is the standard distant to target? Does it change with the caliber?

Where can I buy bowling pins?

Any particular bench, stand design for the targets?

What the best value timer in your opinion?

Any other rules I might have missed.

Thanks in advance!

If you have any specific questions i shot Second Chance 15+ years and was a master Blaster for both HG and LG. Basically the distance is 25' from the row of pins and thay are 3' from the back edge. The 9 pin event they were 1' from the back edge. Have loads of fun.

The "match" I shot which was really more a bunch of friends getting together was 5 pins per person on a standard banquet table. At 12yds.

I buy my pins at my two local bowling alley. One of them is very cool with me shooting them up, the other is more hippy run so I tell them I use them for an art project and they don't ask anymore questions.

Here is the basics of rules I used to form our rifle clubs first pin shoot. It was set up for stock pistols.
Enjoy

Hey slammy, hope you can join us in Hinesville for our next one on Sep 21st. We use 5 pins on a table at 7 yards. The table is composed of a 3/4 inch plywood sheet sitting on top of 8 old tires (two stacks of 4). We usually get our pins from the Ft Stewart bowling alley but we've also bought some from bowling alleys in Savannah - about a buck each IIRC...

Cowboy asked a good question. I've only rarely shot bowling pins that were left at the range but for those that work with them at matches how do you deal with ones that get hit at the bottom and will no longer stand but are in otherwise reasonable shape?

If the bottom of the pin gets damaged, we then cut off the top 8 inches or so and we use these in the rimfire pin matches. We generally get 3-4 matches out of the pins but they do tend to get heavier and less "lively" as they get filled up with lead. Here's a pic of the first pin match I shot here, actually won this one, and it shows the layout very well...

"...What is Second Chance?..." It was the pin shoot that started all pin shooting. Ran on, Dick Davis', the owner of Second Chance Body Armour, property near Central Lake, Mi. Not far from Traverse City, Mi. Ran the first week of June. Might have been the second week.
Dick used to say he invited 500 to 600 of his friends over to shoot. Never heard a raised voice from any of 'em either. Not even a parent yelling at his/her kid. Dick set up the whole property, 600 acres, as a range to shoot everything from .22 pistols up to and including .50 BMG 's. Fireworks display most evenings too.
Your entry fee,(less than $250US, as I recall) covered your Main Event(3 tables of pins at 7 yards with the pins 1 foot from the front of the 4' x 8' table), paid the timer babes plus your lunch and dinner for a week. Accomodations and breakfast was up to you. You could camp for free on the property though. Pay as you played after your Main Event was done. For example, the PEE event was an SMG event using a provided SMG(or your own) and ammo.
All the big name pro shooters, some gun rag writers and big name gunsmith shops were there. You could pay for ammo and shoot a bunch of assorted belt fed MG's or SMG's plus firearms provided by factory sales reps.
Best vacations I've ever had.
Sadly, local politicians and anti-firearm locals decided they didn't want the millions of dollars dumped into the local resort area economy, annually, and moved to end the shoot using frivolous law suits and outright lies.

If you would like to read some unbelievably hilarious stories about Second Chance there are some posted by the original gang who originated the sport on the Brian Enos forum under a category titled "Hell, I was there!" Davis would set up large propane tanks at long range and people would blow them up. One night one of them turned into a rocket. You should read this. You can't make stuff like this up.

"...set up large propane tanks..." Done at the "Night Tracer Festival". Last time I got to Second Chance, is was 10 100 lb tanks, a bunch of 25 pounders, a car, a refrigerator, mixed with gasoline and fireworks. Bunch of guys with assorted MG's and rifles at around 500 yards. Nothing whatever happened, other than a nice, gentle, white, cloud wafting over the ground(LPG is heavier than air) until Dick fired a few rounds of .50 BMG APTI(not evil then). Lovely big WHOOSH, a fireball and a cloud of thick black smoke(several hundred feet high). Not one propane tank budged. My buddy and I were kind of disappointed. No flying tanks. Moreso about not having a suitable rifle with us.
