My sons are both in Cub Scouts, and recieve Boy's Life magazine. A short article in this month's edition talks about bug out bags, calling them by that name. Recommends that kids make one and keep it handy in case of disaster. Decent advice for a kid, actually. Small clothing supply. Hygiene materials. Non-perishable foods and water. Small toys/games/books to entertain the kiddos. Poncho, knife, first aid supplies, flashlight, radio, batteries. And, it encourages the boys to get Mom and Dad to put important documents in a zip-loc baggie for safety.

Other than weapons, which are Mom and Dad's responsibility, it looks like the BSA hasn't completely gone soft.

I was in the Boy Scouts many years ago and kept a bug out bag at the ready for years. I don't have the list of what was in it, but I was convinced I could leave to go anywhere in the country within ten minutes and be just fine. I really believe it's a good idea, just because there are so many reasons one might be forced to leave their home -- severe weather being the one that tops my list, nowadays.

A lot of companies are teaching about it too... Depending on where you live they have suggestions and emergency numbers and articles for your bag and what not.

It is becoming the American way of life.
