I am planning to order a Boyd's pro-varmint stock for a Howa mini action build that I am putting together. They offer a pillar bedding option for $62. On the few other Boyds stocks I have used, I have just bedded with JB weld with good results. But was already thinking I would do pillars on this one, and then bed around the back and sides of the recoil lug. The front action screw goes into the recoil lug, so the lug would be sitting on the pillar.

I can do that for less than $62 so I am leaning towards skipping it, but I wanted to see if anyone had ordered a stock with this option and had opinions on whether they did it particularly well (or poorly). They don't seem to have any photos or anything on their site.

I did my own. This is for an Axis II with 6.5CM, all stainless steel. You can see the pillar in the epoxy action bed.

Unlike the original stock, I am now metal to metal top to bottom with epoxy bedding. The rifle is embarrassingly accurate and is not ammo picky. I would probably just do my own and in doing so finish bedding the action.

Very nice work there. That is pretty much how I would approach it if I do it myself, modified for the recoil lug that is integrated into the action. As you point out, since I would be bedding anyway, adding pillars isn't much additional effort, so the price seems a touch steep unless a person doesn't feel comfortable doing it themselves.

I'm not sure what that is in the third photo, is that part of the pillar? It looks like the front action screw, but it is recessed into the stock rather than sandwiching the trigger guard to the stock and pillar.

i just received a varmint stock for a ruger predator. i paid for the bedded pillars. what i got was a pair of alum spacers pressed into the hole, no glass. glad you did your own. fwiw

This is exactly what I was wondering. Definitely not paying $62 for that, sounds like a bit of a stretch to call that bedding. Maybe they should call them "spacers" instead. If they happen to be a little too long they probably do more damage than good.

Thanks for posting that up.

That is the forward magazine catch, an aluminum aftermarket part, that replaces a plastic part thus providing full metal to metal for the front action screw. Not applicable to your rifle.
