Hello:

I am looking at purchasing a Traditions pistol kit.

I was thinking more along the lines of the Trapper kit.

Does anyone have any recommendations on which kit is better than others, where to buy from, and whats a good price? I'm also open to other brands/styles. I just liked how the trapper looked.

As to building the kit, I think I'll be alright.

Thanks for any input.

from all reports the kits are simply produced via the old "if part x doesnt measure to specifications, through it in this bin. when full take bin to packing area for "kit gun line""

Pistol Kits

You might have a look at Sitting Fox's website. They have kits available and seem to care alot more about providing you with everything you need to complete the project. The address is:

I haven't ordered anything from them yet but have heard some good things about them.

Building any kit has its risks but Traditions stocks many replacement parts and may even replace defective kit parts as a matter of courtesy.

The Trapper kit is available at the Sportman's Guide:

The Trapper and Lyman Plains pistol is available at Mid South:

Dixie carries the Pedersoli & Traditions Kentucky pistol kit and several others. Check their user reviews:

The Possibles Shop also carries some Traditions & the Lyman pistol kits:

I would recommend to simply buy a factory assembled pistol. Right now at Cherry's, the Pedersoli .45 & .50 Kentucky is on sale for less $ than the same kit costs at Dixie:

And the Traditions .50 Buckskinner is on clearance for $149 directly from Traditions. Buy a spare nipple along with it because you may need it, and it's ready to shoot.

Traditions Kit

I have some experience with Traditions Kits. The .32 kit is inaccurate with any load at any range. I would seriously recommend getting a different pistol kit. I have used Lyman pistol and rifle kits. They also are inexpensive and much better kits.

I do have a Traditions Crockett rifle which is accurate and a fine piece of machinery.

I've assembled a Lyman Great Plains .50 cal. kit before. It went pretty good.
Had to stain the wood and cold-blued the metal parts. The gun looked good and is very accurate up to 35 yds. There was probably a smidgen of wood work to do to get an exact fit into the stock.
Would highly recommend their kit/pistol.

I have the Traditions Trapper kit.
It's about the same amount of work as Scotjute describes in the post above.
I like the handle best of the pistols I've tried, but I'm not too keen on double set triggers in general, although the one on this pistol works fine.
I need to get off my *ss and finish the wood inletting for the casting on the butt and spend some more time fitting the lock plate so the hammer centers better on the nipple. Then sand and stain the stock, and blue the barrel.
I got a Lee REAL 50 cal mold and cast some for this gun, as I described in an other thread here, I'm just not done yet, (goofing with cap n ball revolvers) so I can't tell you 'The Rest of the Story'.

Thanks for the input everyone.

I think I might snag one if I can find a price I'm happy with. I'm really interested in starting into the BP territory. I've played with a friends cap and ball revolver and wanted something with a little more...bang.

I picked up two Lyman GPP .50's about a year or so ago after a tip-off about a sale on this forum.

The building was a lot of fun; i used Laurel Mountain's browning solution, to great effect.

One i spent a lot of time on, and the other i kept pretty rough...not much on finish...and cut the barrel down 2" and filed the sights flush with the barrel...in proper dueling style.

The rough gun came with me this summer on my sail across the Atlantic - Newport RI to Lymington England via Horta in the Azores. It's barrel now resides in the English channel. (see English gun laws as to why) I went light on the finish on account of the expend-ability, and saltwater corrosion.... Great gun. It made converts to BP out of the rest of the crew, and holed the sails of a bunch of Portuguese Men O'War... our favorite targets. For about three days in the middle we passed by one within range about as quick as it takes to reload, so targets were plentiful. In colder water, we went with the towed-bottle target array. Unfortunately, I only brought along 200 balls.

I recommend the Plains pistol.

Already got...ordered up from Lyman, and got not only the barrel but the whole assembly for 50 bucks, of i remember correctly. Came blued - after i wrap up my master's thesis (t-minus 4 weeks) i'll have time to brown it....my procrastination hinges on THR. A new kit would be awesome about now.

I would add that Traditions has great customer service. I purchased two of their KY flintlock pistol kits and they didn't come with the ramrod spring. Didn't even show it in the parts digram. When I emailed them they sent the parts without any questions.
No cost to me.
