I am ready to "build" my own BP gun from a kit. I think a Traditions kit will be my first attempt so I am looking for a place to buy one. I checked out my local Bass Pro today and they only carry one style, the Kentucky. I would prefer something with less wood to it, such as the Derrhunter. Online Bass Pro has them for $179 but only in .50 (I would like to find a .54 cal). Does anyone know of a good place to look for a kit (Cabelas only shows one, and it is more than $300)?

Thanks in advance.

Theres dixie gun works and If I can remember right the possible shop. I myself just picked up a kit tonight down at the sportsmen wearhouse.

Many, many places sell kits. I personally recommend Deer Creek Products. They do not have a web site or email, so you need to call them at 765-525-6181. Good folks, their prices may not be the absolute cheapest down to the nearest dollar but they will be competitive.

I've not gone that route yet, still busy with a Davide Pedersoli Indian Trade Musket in kit form.

I have completed a few kits by Traditions, the level of ability required different levels of "ability" to complete them.

The Pedersoli was indeed very highly finished already, made me decide to even attempt some some wood working on the stock.
