Been bored and want to build another rifle. Finished my other projects. Don't have a BP gun yet and was thinking building a kit would be enjoyable and fun for a winter project.

Was looking at the Traditions Hawken. Like the double set triggers and all.

I'll look into all suggestions as long as they involve building a kit. Budget would be about $350 or thereabouts.

Thanks,

Fireside

I just built a Traditions St. Louis Hawkins .50 from a kit that I bought at a flea market. It was the first kit I'd ever done, and it was interesting. Nothing matched up, there were a few screws missing ($10 from Traditions), but it turned out pretty good. I paid $100 for the kit (plus $10 for the screws).

Nothing against the Traditions Hawken, but the Lyman Great Plains Rifle kit may coast a bit more but you do get a higher quality rifle and the option of both 1 in 48" or 1 in 24 twist rifling. The Lyman's snail-type breech performs a bit faster with black powder substitutes from my experience.

I do not like the plastic sights that came with this Traditions kit gun. They work, they're easy to adjust, but they're plastic.
But, the price was right.
