I have been looking for a Brake/Compensator for my 7.62 bolt and was wondering about the correlation between the size of the holes and the perceived volume.
Do larger holes equate to more noise and blast for those standing near and smaller holes for less blast?
I'm leaning towards a linear comp but was wondering how a bird cage (battlecomp type) with very small holes would compare.

I am looking primarily for noise reduction(to the shooter/partner) and recoil/muzzle flip control in that order.

P.S. I'm in Cali so a suppressor is out of the question, pity as it is the solution.

Thanks

I was talking to a local gunsmith and he was telling me about a smith who used to do "ported" barrels with a lot of really small holes, the result was no muzzle blast at all and a big fight with the American Takers of Fun.

Typically brakes/compensators result in inreased blast, with a reduction in recoil. I can't really see what ATF regulation that porting a barrel would violate, but I'm no legal expert.

The many fine holes bled the pressure and the lack of decibels lead to it being defined at a "silencer".

I was wondering if one could make a compensator with fine holes that would have the same decibel level at the muzzle as a non-ported barrel, but would direct the noise away from the shooter.

I'm not challenging your veracity, so I, therefore, believe that your "local gunsmith" WAS prevaricatiing, or he was simply f.o.s.

A linear like the Levang comp well be the least noise at the shooting line. Comps with a lot of small holes are called "pepper pot" style. I have one on a Grendel and the noise/blast is not near as bad as other styles I have used on 5.56. I have a pepper pot on a Swiss ZFK and it's slightly loader than a non comped 7.5 Swiss and quieter than the SP brake on a 7.5 Swiss.

Check out the "Branson Brake" it's basically a A2 birdcage with the end closed, good compromise of noise and muzzle control.
