Everyone has their own preferences as far as brand loyalty goes. What brands do you tend to avoid when selecting a handgun? For me it's probably Auto-Ordnance, based on past experience.

Ruger - I steer clear of Ruger.

My experience with them (owning) their single action revolvers and (shooting) their .45 ACP pistols has been less than stellar. It will be a cold day - a really, really cold day - in hell before I ever buy another Ruger handgun.

I hear good things about their Model 77 rifle line though my experience with their handguns will make it unlikely that I'd ever buy one.

Here's my list of "never" or "never again" brands:

KelTec-heard too many horror stories

Springfield Ordnance-burned twice

Auto Ordnance-burned once

Taurus-"do ya feel lucky"

Kimber-can they really be worth so much more money?

To end on a positive note, Sig, Colt, Bersa, S&W, Browning, and Walther are current for sure keepers. Ruger, Glock, and CZ have been there but not now.

I've had remarkably good luck with most > $200 handguns... both new and used. Brands I generally don't like, other than the sub $200 ones:

Ruger - they generally work, but I usually don't like how they feel at all.
SIG - Again, they definately work, but I've never shot one that I found comfortable
S&W - I don't care about the agreement, I just don't like how most of them feel in my hands though I would consider some of the smaller single stacks.
Beretta - Won't likely own another one any time soon largely because of the safety.
H&K - USPs feel way too blocky.
Auto Ordnance - just a general aversion to the older ones... A NRM Colt isn't radically more expensive so that is what I would recommend.

Honestly, between CZ, EAA, Colt, Springfield, Kahr I should be pretty happy in the near future. And I don't have anything against Glock though I'm not likely to buy a new one anytime soon.

:p

S&W, Ruger and Beretta. Of the three, the Beretta IS the most reliable in my experience. I just don't like either the look or feel of any of them.

My list would include the following in NO particular order:

S&W Sigma (any caliber)
Auto Ordnance
Kel-Tec
Taurus (auto's for sure)
Kahr
Glock (been there & done that)
Astra
Llama
Raven
Davis
Bryco
Jennings
F.I.E.
Bernadelli
RG
Auto Mag
Rock Island Armory (edited to include this junker)

Oops! 10-Ring just reminded me to add Charles Daly,
AMT, and Hi-Point to the list. Thank you Sir

Best Wishes,

Handgun brands I'd avoid (autoloaders only)

Kahr (bad experience with a P9)
Colt (1911 Jammamatic and Colt's failure to honor the warranty)
Taurus (seen a number of broken ones)
Walther (Likewise)
Ruger (Terrible ergonomics)
SIG (Well made, but ONLY the P210 fits my hand)
S&W (Only the M-41 fits me)
Wilson Combat (Overpriced for what you get, quality has become spotty)
Kimber (MIM parts)
AMT (junk . . . only see them on the used market now)
AutoMag (prone to breakage . . . again, only on the used market these days.)
L.E.S. Rogak (Cheap ripoff of the Steyr GB . . . a real jammamatic . . . only see used these days)
Astra, Llama, Jennings, Bryco, and other low-buck off brands.

I avoid:
Kimber
Colt
Dan Wesson
SiG

I'm iffy on:
Taurus
Glock
IMI
Kel-Tec
Smith & Wesson

But I actually do like 1911s. No, really! :)

I'll stick with autoloader companies since this is the autoloader forum.... and not get into revolvers.

S&W - Blame their marketing. Heh... never really paid any attention to them. and with all the great guns out there y start? Oh yeah, and their Sigma's. Ah also... their 1911's, that billboard rollmark kills it. I want a Scandium 1911 from them but not with that billboard advertisement on the slide. Now I know why I have this intense aversion to SW auto's. Blah... :D
Ruger - Eh, their guns are ugly, ergo's suck, and the one I shot wasn't very impressed by. They're reliable and all... but boring to shoot, look at, and I would assume own.
Auto-Ordnance - The low end junker of 1911's. I've heard enough of them.
Para-Ordnance - Heh, I think I have an aversion to any Ordnance 1911's. This company I found screws up the 1911's too much. Double actions, double stack etc. The one I shot was a jammer. And from my research I've heard more neg. than positives.
Kel tec - I have no need for a kel tec
Taurus - No wonder clones for me.
AMT, Jennings, Ravens, Bryco - They all get categorized by the POS category here.
Springfield Armory - Their 1911's, eh... never really became fascinated by them. From what I've read, they've had a few QC issues out of the box, mainly the sights falling off and shooting low. The Loaded SA I shot also shot low. And it wasn't cuz I was flinching. :D The M1A I have, I must say quality wise I'm not impressed. The fiberglass stock is a true junker. And it smells funny. It does shoot well though.
Rock Island Armory - I rather own a SA milspec than a RIA, and I dont even like SA's. ;)
Llama - Junker 1911
Beretta - My experience with the FS series (92FS and 96FS) has been less than average. The 92FS I shot was a jammer. Maybe a lemon, yes... but how badly it jammed made me want to throw it down the range. The sights I found sucks, and also the triggers I found were really vague. I couldn't figure out for the life of me when the gun would fire.

Specific problems I've had with new handguns:

Ruger Mark II SS .22 Match Target: frequent stovepipe jams...regardless of thorough cleaning and lubrication or different mags.
Ruger Blackhawk SS .357 Mag w/.38-Spl lead ammo: Fine with jacketed bullets...but my favorite .38-spl lead target loads will lead up the barrel in one cylinder load.
Taurus Model 96 SS 9-mm: Dislike the feel of the gun in my hand and inaccurate.
CZ-75B in .40: Feels great in the hand, but not accurate.
Marvel .22 conversion for 1911A1: Occasional failure to eject jams regardless of type or brand of ammo.
EAA .45 w/EAA .22 conversion unit: occasional jams...REALLY have to heep this one cleaned and lubed...and still have occasional problems.

Favorites...utterly reliable, feels good in the hand, highly accurate...the ones I mostly shoot while the others stay in the vault:

Ruger Blackhawks in .357 Mag and .45 Colt.
S&W K-38 .38 Spl (MUCH better than my two Colt Officers Matchs!)
Norinco 1911A1 (most reliable .45 I've owned...accurate and digests every type of load and bullet type without a hiccup! My others have definite ammo preferences and dislikes.)
Makarov in 9-mm Mak. (two..an 8-shot Bulgie and a 10-shot Russian w/adjustable sight...my favorite for concealed carry.)
CZ-75B w/ Kadet .22 conversion (so good I leave it in this configuration)

I don't currently have a 9-mm x 19 that I like...am looking longingly at the Springfield XDs!:D

I avoid the following in no particular order based upon personal experience.

Ruger
Taurus (very bad experience years ago)

Everything else is a case by case basis.

Besides the cheap pot-metal crap (Lorcin, jennings, cobra, etc...) I have no likelyhood of ever purchasing a:

Glock - too common*
Para-ord - too over-rated IMO
S&W - none seem to fit me comfortably
Taurus - over-rated and too common*
Kimber - too common* and over-rated as I've heard of too many w/ probs
Kel-Tec - previous expreience wasn't great
Hi-point - prior experience and horror stoies

* I have this thing about owning the latest and greatest just because everyone else does - ain't jumpin' on no bandwagon.

Gun brands that I will never touch again for almost any price:

KEL-TEC!!!!!!!!!! WOW! What a piece of garbage. It makes Jennings and Raven look like baby SIGs.:D

Intratec (Tec-9/AB-10). What good is a single shot "assult" pistol? It was truly a spray and pray because even with careful aim, you still couldn't hit anything with it. The bore on my 9mm AB-10 was about 10mm. Maybe I just got one of those rare .40 cal AB-10s.:D

Taurus. Not as bad as the top two but not very good either.

Taurus - I'd only buy a revolver if it was very inexpensive
Rossi - ditto
Auto-Ordnance - synonymous with junk
Jennings - paperweight
Raven - paperweight
Lorcin - paperweight
Bryco - paperweight
Llama (1911) - there are better ones
RG - paperweight

Kel-Tec, Ruger (autoloaders, revolvers okay), Llama, Astra, Bersa, Rossi. Shouldn't even have to mention Raven/Lorcin/Jennings/Bryco pot metal thingies, right?
I don't understand all the anti-Taurus sentiment; I've owned two excellent PT-92s and two great Model 85s -- I'd bet my life, and my family's, on 'em ... all well-made, accurate and stone reliable.

Staways- Glock
Para Ordnance
Kimber
Glock
Glock
:D

I'z Likes- Sigs 239, 220
Dan Wesson Marksman
XD 357 & 40
Wilson Combat KZ :D :) :D
S&W 1911SC :D :D :D :D
CZ 40P
Kahr K9

There are few I would avoid based on brand alone. Lorcin, Jennings, etc.

But I try not to let one bad experience determine what I will buy in the future. If I did, I'd never own another Glock, Springfield Armory, Walther, Sig, CZ, Taurus, S&W, Ruger or Beretta.

I've experienced malfunctions with all of the above, but that doesn't mean the whole brand is junk.

I will not own:
S&W autos
Glock
Rossi
Kimber
Taurus
HiPoint
Bryco
Jennings
Davis
AMT
Charles Daley
Dan Wesson
Any cast 1911

Glock.
Hi Point, well, all those zinc frame striker fired POS single column blowback pistols.
Smith autos - nothing wrong with them, just don't "fit"
Steyr - grip angle
Anything built by the drunken monkeys at Century Arms....

Gee, if it doesn't say CZ on the side, I really don't look much closer...

Other than the obvious pot metal wonders , I'm not a snob : I currently own : Ruger ( revolvers only ) , Walther , Smith and Wesson , SIG , Beretta , Glock , Browning , Star , Kahr and STI handguns . I'm willing to give anything a try without basing my findings on someone else's opinion , I'll take advice on what has a history of parts breakage and warranty work and so on but statements like " X's suck " don't do much to weigh whether I walk out of the shop with a brand X . I have an aversion to Chinese made things so for example , a Norinco 1911 probably won't end up in the safe at any point but just anything else is fair game - I've never lost my arse trading and selling anything and even the guns I own that barely get used such as my Single Six and Edge .40 are still fun in their own rights . The whole notion of not owning a gun because it's too popular is strange , especially since it seems most people that say it own something like a S&W .38 or 1911 !

Never say never.

I thought I'd never own a Rossi, but I recently picked up this NIB 3" .44 Spl five shot for under $200. It is well made and surprisingly accurate.

Who knows, I may even try a Taurus someday.......
