I was shooting my series 80 colt gold cup trophy today and shot two of my most accurate mag groups yet. Both mags were single ragged holesat 15 yds with a sandbag rest.

After shooting I looked into my chamber and noticed some brass shavings in the chamber. Upon picking up mybrass I noticed paralell shiny marks on the headstamp area if my brass. I looked all over my gun and stripped it to find nothing terribly out of the ordinary. I was looking at the bottom of my slide and noticed very sharp edges around the 80 series firing pin plunger. It almost looked like the metal there had chipped but I'm not totally sure what it looked like before. Regardless that area doesn't touch the brass and I am fairly sure the shavings were brass and pretty sure they came off the headstamp area of the case. I cleaned the gun, and shot another mag with no issue.

Anyone know what might be going on? Or possibly had the same or a similar problem?

Thanks

MC

If it happened at the headstamp end why would the shavings be inside the chamber would be my question. Did it just now start doing that? Are the cases damaged for reloading? If not I'd enjoy those nice groups.

But no, I've never seen anything like that.

I just started using Tripp mags. I am thinking maybe the feed lips are doing thud to the brass? Going to gave to measure the marks.

xmanpike...Your last post (above) seems to indicate you have had enough cocktails for the night...:D

A photo of the scratched cases would help...:)

I tried to get some photos to put up, but had to take them with my iPhone as that is how I am able to post right now. Pictures didn't come out. Going to run a mag or two today and see how things work. Hopefully I'll be able to post some pics soon.

Won't be able to post pics for a few days as these posts are with cell phone. Shot today and confirmed that all the metal shavings are brass. Feed ramp is smooth. Going to look s little closer and find exactly where they are coming from. Very few brass shavings today compared with yesterday.
