Is is okay to store/transport an autoloader in a breakdown case? I want to bring my Winchester Super x2 on a plane and don't want to have to check a 50'' case that screams "GUN!". I'd love to get a ~32'' breakdown case, but usually they are listed as being used for O/U or SxS guns. Is is safe/clean to do the same for an autoloader?

Clean?

I'd probably bring along some Rem Oil Wipes. Those will get the fouling off the mag tube, chamber area, etc. before you case the gun. I use those anyway, before casing a shotgun for transport after use, so I'm not packing it up with a layer of sweat or moisture on it.

Otherwise, I might bring a couple rags and rubber bands to pad sharp edges -- I'm not sure what the innards on the SX2 are like, but the 1100 barrel has sharp corners on the receiver end. That way I could prevent damage to a nice case. Might not be necessary.

There are some cases that are designed so you can cut the foam yourself to fit the gun.

Should be fine.

I find that with some egg-crate foam cases, the parts move around.

But cases are available with straps in them, or you can just put a hard foam block between the barrel and the rest of the gun. Airline baggage gets tossed around quite a bit.:)

I put a gunsock around my O/U barrel to prevent damage to the stock in the event of shifting.

I don't want to hijack the thread, but you guys may be able to help me while talking about the same subject we started with helping JeffGirard. I have been trying to figure a way to put an imprint of my gun into the egg crate foam. A sharp cutting tool does not do a very neat job. I would like for it to look neat etc. Anyone been successful with a similar effort?

Hot wire, I think.

The crafty types have electric hot wire cutters for foam.

This came up in Google. I have no clue if it's a good price.

My benelli M1-Super 90 came in a breakdown case. It has a molded bottom with an egg carton top, and it works fine. I just take the charging handle out and put in the slot of the elevator and it seems to sit there just fine.

You might be able to call/write Winchester asking if they have molded ones. Also, the idea of cutting the foam is pretty good too.

Gun cases

First from talking with Trap shooters that fly all the time.

GUN case for Air travel needs to be, a metal case that locks with a paddle lock. if you have a wood case or plastic from the Manufacturer you still need a matel case over this.

Also the Grey instrument case foam, is among the least exspensive to buy, and a good sharp knife will cut it with out a problem, Will OK my knifes are sharper then most, so maybe thats why I don't have a problem.

The stores I have been in that sell foam, have a cutter that cuts foam slicker then............ Take a templet, and have them do the cutting for you.

My Autolaoder goes everywhere, taken down, and haven't had a problem in years. Get a good case. it may cost as much as a shotgun but worth every penny!
