There's Something About Side By Sides.....

My first shotgun was/is an LC Smith 20ga sxs. full/ mod. The dbl triggers are great for quail hunting. The chokes are a little tight for shooting over dogs though, but hey...it's first rate anyway.

Old thread, guys.

Space, speed is more a matter of feel and experience than action style. I can get off two shots from a double gun a little faster than with a pump, but the difference is quite small.

BTW, I can get two shots off from a pump faster than a good hand can with an A5 auto loader. So can you, with practice.

1 oz, since then I've shot that Grulla some more. Great shotgun and pretty as a palomino filly.

KB, Polywad makes low pressure spreader loads that should help your Elsie find those quail.

Old thread, but not ancient. For HD business, I have an old Maverick 88 in the bedroom. For fun, I have a 30 inch Western Arms ( Ithaca ) and a Remington Spartan ( Baikal ). All in 12ga flavor. The Maverick only recently replaced the coach gun little over a year ago.

I shot 50 percent with my Spartan 20 a couple of weekends ago, pretty good for me on doves, was hitting the long shots as well as the easy ones. I amazed myself. I love that little lightweight thing. It's a little whippy, but I adapt, and it fits well since I added a recoil pad to add some pull length to it.

Edit...but if you subtract the shots I fired to take cripples or other such things, I shot better than 50 percent. I shot 15 birds with 31 rounds. I finished one bird my buddy shot and I shot twice at a number of birds I collected, so......:D

Can any of you experienced side by side guys tell me if they are faster than a pump. Thanks

In my experience, faster to the shoulder, faster on target. Back up shot, a little faster, though my gas auto is faster yet, methinks. Not much difference in the auto and the SxSs, though. The 12 gauge SxS is a might slower to recover from and slugs are, well, not pleasant in that gun. The little 20 is awesome, though.

I, somewhat recently, purchased a 311 (in 16ga) from a friend, and, tell ya what, it is one hell of a sweet gun.. I KNOW I KNOW, nothing expensive, nothing overly special, but I LIKE IT!

Local shop has a CZ Bobwhite that I could get walk away with for a bit over $500... I WANT IT!!!

Easy answer....BUY IT! :D Unlike many, I'm not snobby about SxSs under 1000 bucks, even under 500. Heck, I can't afford the snob choices. I'm retired and not making a lot until I can get my gubment checks in 2 years. :D Even then, I won't be flying to London for a fitting at the H&H factory anytime soon, lotto being a possibility, I guess. I've found some of these cheaper SxSs to be quite good shooters if not much in eye appeal. But, it ain't the hand checkering, the engraving and game scenes, and the rich walnut that does the killing, if you find one that fits you. I can't see forgoing SxSs just because you can't afford a 60K example. Lots of affordable choices out there. Like I say, I LOVE my Baikal. I'm not looking at the wood when I'm shooting it, after all. I'm fixated on the target. I'm sure those high dollar guns are nice, will never know, however. I'm perfectly happy shooting what I've got.

For $1200 new the S&W is far and away a better Turkish gun than the Huglu made ones. For around $1,000 a used Ugartechea base model can be found. For $300 and up some AyA guns made for Sears in the 50's and 60's can be found. Remember - these are field guns, not target guns, so they most likely have as many rounds through them in 50 years as I put through my target gun in a month

There ARE good deals on better made used and new guns out there - you have to look and be patient

McGunner, you got it together, my man. Feet on the ground, BS nowhere in sight.

I'd love to own a classy SxS such as a Merkel but I can't afford to spend that kind of money on one gun, my income level simply won't allow it.

I have a Baikal IZH 43 28ga. Fixed choke I/C & Mod 25" barrel, distributed by EAA. It preceeded the Spartan line. I bought it new several years ago. It is essentially the same gun as the Spartan SPR 210. I've killed hundreds, maybe into the low thousands of doves with it. I think I got my $250 worth out of it, should it decide to crater.

I have held a CZ Bobwhite 20ga. at Cabelas in Buda. It certainly didnt exude POS. They wanted just under $900 for it. If I ever found a clean one for $500 I'd be tempted to buy it and gamble that it would handle the round count I'd put through it for the rest of my life.
