I've been shooting my Les Baer PII and Ed Brown Exec. Target a lot over the past few weeks. Had them out to the range again this afternoon. I was working on some draws and target acquisition for speed steel. I've been shooting a Sig 226 Sport Stock the last few months. Didn't feel that comfortable with the 1911, and didn't have enough rounds through these two to rely on them for a match. I put a couple hundred through the Sig, and a couple hundred through the CZ75BD I just put the fiber optic front sight on. It's shooting quite nice now.

Decided to try the 1911s out with the Hogue speed holster just for grins. No time pressure and wanted to just get comfortable with the single action drill. Did a lot of draw, one shot, draw, two shot, draw two shot on one target, two shot on another target. Trying to simulate speed steel with two target stands separated a few yards.

The first thing I noticed is that it's not that big of a deal to get the safety off. One reason I've stayed with the DA/SA is that I have that drill down pretty good. The second thing I noticed is that these guns are a lot slimmer than the Sig, about the same as the CZ. I knew that intellectually but didn't have a real feel for what that difference would be in a draw and shoot environment. I had put some palm swells on the Baer, which I really like for target shooting, but didn't like so much for the draw and shoot. Got it feeling chunky like the Sig.

The next thing I noticed is that my first shots are noticeably better in SA than in DA. Both the 1911s have black target sights. The Sig has fiber optic front and back and the CZ has the new fiber optic front with white dot rear. I think that for speed steel the fiber optic has an advantage.

I was shooting 7" paper targets at 20 and 25 yards. That's much tougher than anything we set up at matches, but I'm finding that the 10" plates at 15 yards in competition look about like a 7" plate at 25 yards in practice. I was getting about 95% hits on the 20 yard and 60% hits on the 25 yard targets. I adjusted the sights to show more of a 6 o'clock hold which worked better for the faster shooting.

I had one problem with one magazine. It was getting gunked up and not letting the rounds feed properly. There are a bunch of mags on the bench in pieces tonight. I had time and interest in getting the guns clean and the mags clean, just not reassembled.

I'm not sure if I'm ready for the 1911 in a match yet. I think the guns are running good enough. I'm shooting 200 gr SWC Bear Creek and Precision over 4.1 Clays. Cycle the guns great and soft shooting for good follow up shots. I've got about 4,000 through the Brown and 2,000 through the Baer. They both came to me slightly used and I must say that I had great luck with both guns. Both sellers were 100% accurate with their representations of the condition of the guns. I know that I've put considerably more rounds through each than the original owners did. I'm also getting some holster wear and other good character markings. No idiot marks!!!

They are both keepers. I was shooting the Brown a bit better today, will run them both with standard grips next time.

The Sig and CZ are not for sale. Need the nines.
