ELITE COP SHOOTS HERSELF AT POLICE HQ
Aug 3 2004
By Nathan Yates

A POLICE markswoman who guarded politicians and diplomats has shot herself dead.

The 30-year-old, who has not been named, walked into the armoury of her police station and selected a gun.

She was found slumped on the floor having shot herself in the head.

Sources said she had been depressed since her parents died in a car crash two weeks ago.

She was a constable in Scotland Yard's elite Diplomatic Protection Group, also known as SO16.

Her duties included protecting visiting heads of state and members of Government.

She was trained to use firearms and regularly carried a gun on duty.

The WPC went into Territorial Policing HQ in Victoria, Central London, late on Sunday.

Officers in SO16 are handpicked for some of the most high-profile duties undertaken by Scotland Yard.

They are trained to protect politicians and diplomats from attack.

The high-pressure work requires huge commitment and a willingness to risk life and limb.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said: "The officer appears to have taken her own life. She had suffered a gunshot wound."

I'm not sure I get the title of this thread. Can you elaborate on how this story relates to the impact of England's gun laws on suicide rates?

...British gun control fails to prevent suicide

We already knew that.

In this instance, it didn't even cause the suicidee to choose a different method of death.

Beginning tomorrow they are going to begin retrofitting British service weapons with little chains that prevent them from pointing the muzzle at themselves.

to get away from the obvious morbidness and incredibly disrespectful use of this tragedy to try and make a point (which Lee signally fails to do), its worth noting that this PC had to cope with the deaths of her father, brother, uncle and aunt in a car crash, as well as the breakup of her relationship.

what the dice roll are just too much for some people, god bless.

agricola,
to get away from the obvious morbidness and incredibly disrespectful use of this tragedy to try and make a point
You mean the same way every anti-gun politician does when they open their mouths to decry guns? Turnabout is fair play, especially when you're as tired as folks get watching anti's stand on the headstones of those who died at Columbine and using them as political soapboxes. It's far too late to call a ceasefire on that point.
It's a shame about the officer, especially if by taking the easy way out she puts even more stress and sorrow on surviving family.
