I have a 1964 Browning A5, it's in very good condition except for a small crack in the forend.
The crack is on the underside at the base of the receiver end.
It's on the outside, about 1" long and does not appear to go right through to the inside.
I don't want it to get any worse, but I'm unsure how to fix it.
What's the best thing to do?

Jay

That is very common on a Browning A5.
Get some epoxy. Microbed works well for me.
Mix up a tiny bit per instructions and force it into the crack with a finger.
Use WD40 to clean your hand and wipe any epoxy smears off the forearm.
Let the epoxy cure for the time stated in the instructions and you should be good to go.

A5 forend

there is a Reinforcing peace of wood inside the forearm, it is cross grained to strengthen the thinnest part of the stock.

When repairng a forend, make sure this part is reatached with the glue or epoxy, and is pressed down into it's grove, so it will still slide over the barrel lug and recoil spring.

1 inch PVC is really close to right diameter, to be mandrel, if it needs to be inlarged, use tape but lay it longwise on pipe.

There's an epoxy that is used for wood cabinetry in boats. Works like a champ.

Thanks,
I can get Brownells Acra-glas but it's quite expensive, especially as I only want a tiny amount.
I read most of the ordinary epoxy glues aren't that strong, I'm not sure what's the best thing to use.
Any sugestions?

Jay

As I suggested above, call some gun shops and see if they carry Microbed.

I have had some bad experiences with Acra Glas being to sensitive to precise measurements. Sometimes the stuff wouldn't harden, sometimes it started reacting in the mixing cup.

Microbed is easy to use and really works well.

You may consider AccraGlass to be exspensive but frankly and in my opinion, it is far and away the best and most effective product for this type of repair work.
Well worth the money spent.
