I'm having problems with my Browning Auto-5 12 guage 3" chamber ejecting light 2 3/4" 8 shot shells. When I unscrew the spring cap and remove the hand guard/barrel, there are a few rings that fit on top of the spring. My manual mentions changing these around for lighter or heavier loads, but I've been unable to get a combination to work. Anyone have any insight into this? What am I doing wrong? When shooting heavier loads like 2 3/4" slugs or 4 shot and all 3" shells I've tried, it cycles fine.

Thanks for the help.

I have mine configured as in Fig. 1 on that link. It looks like I might need to try the setup in Fig. 2. Thanks for the link.

In my booklet for the A5 3 inch mag shotgun, it states that for shooting any 2 3/4 load, or any steel shot load (inculding three inch ones), the friction rings are as follows:

next to the spring, ONE friction ring, cup forward, and then ONE Bronze friction brake ring next to the section that the magazine tube fits through.

All three inch mag loads require TWO bronze friction rings and another SET of friction rings with the flat surfaces facing each other. The beveled edges of both the Bronze friction brakes then fit the cupped sides.

Spent some time at the range and seem to have it working. It ended up being quite simple in the end. Thanks for the links on the friction ring placement. I had read through my manual and did have it set right for 2 3/4" loads.

When cleaning my gun, I had always cleaned the magazine tube and whiped it "dry" with a light oiling. I applied a fair amount of oil to the tube and reassembled the gun. I shot a few rounds through it and it is working great. I guess I was getting too much friction before with the light loads.

Just a quick note here.

You mentioned trying the configuration in figure 2 .

Figure 2 is for light loads in a 2&3/4 inch gun - not a 3 inch. The correct placement for your magnum gun for light loads is in figure 4 of the link.

The three inch magnum gun is not made to shoot light loads. The lowest power loads should be Heavy feild 2&3/4 ".

With that said, lubing the mag. tube to reduce the friction is about the most you can do to make the gun cycle with lesser powered loads.
