Ok,

So last fall my Browning BLR LT WT 81 stainless (308) got SERIOUSLY jammed with a round in the chamber.
Short story: it's now unjammed, and the original extractor is DUST.

So, I went to install a new one. Browning says I have the right part, but it just doesn't make sense. When the extractor (Without the spring) is installed it has no movement, and a shell casing doesn't seem to fit. With the spring, the whole mess it sticking way too far out, and it can't possibly be right.

There seems like only 'one way' to go together, with the wire spring coming up through the breech bolt and into the hole in the extractor, but it seems like the hole in the extractor is in the wrong place.

HELP! For anyone out there with a BLR 81 like this, what am I doing wrong? do I have the right part? what am I missing? :banghead::cuss::fire::banghead:

Thanks!!

This is the breech bolt with the extractor and spring install, it's clearly sticking out WAY too far.

and without the spring, pushed back in the breech bolt all the way
You can see the hole in the breech bolt under the face of the extractor.

It looks like it is upside down to me. Could be wrong here. That hole in the extractor should be for an extractor spring. Is there a pin going thru the bolt and extractor?

Hi,

The extractor only fits one way, I tried it upside down but no go.

You are right, the hole in the extractor is for the spring, but as you can see from the pics, when spring is through both the pin and the extractor then the extractor is sticking out into the bolt face.

blr

There are 2 series of BLR the one you have is a newer style . It may be possible that is an old stlye extractor .They may use the same extractor but just a thought, I would have to do more research .when you reassemble make sure you get the timing right ,which can be a pain , otherwise it will not fire.

Hi Chris,

I did have the pre-81 extractor sent to me, but it is completely different. This extractor is listed as the long action extractor, but apparently it is supposed to fit all except the 223.

I have had this gun apart several times, so I have no problem with the timing. There is a bit of a trick to it.

Checking Numrich, I see there are three extractors, the short action, 284 and 223 for the Blr Lightning. I would take a guess that your's is for the 223.

OK,

I see that on Numrich.

MGW list four:

B3475095 Extractor BLR & Model 81 Short Action & Lightning Short Action
B3475094 Extractor 284W Model 81
B3475438 Extractor Long Action
B3475544 Extractor Lightning 223R

What you see in the picks is the Long Action extractor (B3475438). I also spent $50 ordering the now discontinued Lightning Short action, B3475095, which is a different style all together, and not even similar.

I guess this means I need either the 284W or the 223? ?? ?? ?

I don't have a gunsmith near here, I am pretty remote.
Unfortunately, the two parts simply don't seem to line up, even if the spring were bent or straight.

Sorry for this being my first post. That is not the correct extractor. I just checked all my newer BLR's, including stainless models and the hole should line up like in your top picture, but the extractor lip should only stick out a very little into the bolt face, as in your bottom picture. Also. on my 30-06's and 450 Marlin, there is no ramp such as what you see with the one you have. The ramp meaning the portion running down from the top to the bottom as seen in the first two pictures. I am betting that extractor is for a small rimmed round such as the 223.

I agree it looks like a 223 extractor. The spring hole has to line up and when it does the extractor is in position for a much smaller cartridge base. Don't guess, call Browning again and get the correct part for your gun.

FYI

So, after it's all said and done I managed to figure out that the part was INCORRECT. There was another extractor, with the same part number for some reason, that was for my rifle. Because the gun was limited edition, my part was is no longer made but I managed to track one down for $20. Numrich gun parts had it, as well as Western Gun Parts here in Canada.

No thanks to browning or Brownell's. Browning refused to help, only telling me to 'mail in my gun'. Brownells, on the other hand, told me I needed a different part (completely incorrect, which cost me another $80. When that didn't work, they changed their story and told me I needed the first part they sent me with some 'fitting'. FITTING! HA!

In the end, I am just glad I don't have a very expensive paper weight on my hands.

Here are some pics of the correct one installed, in case you're curious.
