I inherited a Browning Invector BPS Special Steel 12ga - serial 0774PV152 and it needs a good cleaning. I downloaded an owner’s manual for the gun which describes removal and replacement of the barrel only. I would like to further disassemble the gun for more cleaning of the trigger assembly and the receiver interior, bolt and etc. Are there any other instructions out there that could help me out?

Also with the gun turned over (looking at the bottom ejection port) at the front of the receiver where the magazine tube meets the receiver there is sort of a selector knob with two settings one marked "S" and a second marked "R". In the manual I downloaded I didn’t see where this is described - what is it?

Thanks for any help.

Welcome to THR. My BPS does not seem to have the selector switch that you refer to. My Guns Digest shotgun edition does not cover the BPS but the NRA Guide to Rifles and Shotguns does a good job and says that the switch is for (S)single shot which will after firing the shell in the chamber and ejecting the hull will not feed new shells from the tube magazine. You would have to hand feed the chamber. The (R) Repeating setting will operate normally feeding from the magazine as the chambered shells are ejected. The NRA Guides are available from the NRA.

Thanks

Makes sense - I tried it out and you are correct. I should have known since I have an A5 that has the magazine cutoff as well only it's on the side of the receiver.
Do the NRA books you mention have any details on disassembly of the receiver? Have you ever had the trigger assembly, bolt and etc out of yours for cleaning?

Thanks again

Yes, I've had mine detailed stripped for a thorough cleaning about 3 times in the approx. 15 years I've owned it. The NRA books are in fact disassembly manuals and are adequate. There is one book for Rifle and Shotgun and one book for Handgun. The BPS is covered in two pages and one of those is mostly an exploded diagram. I understand the Gun Digest books have been expanded and cover more guns than my set but I'm not sure if the BPS is yet covered. Their set up is much more thorough with several pages of step by step written and visual instructions with hints on difficult areas of reassembly.Good luck on yours. If I can help PM me.
