I bought my grandson a new Browning SA-22 rifle and I noticed the barrel is tapped for a cantilever scope mount. My Belgian Browning SA-22 has 11mm dovetail cut right in the receiver top.
Is the cantilever better--enough to consider doing that on my old rifle?
+&-?

Yes. It is 100% worth it. The cantilever will hold zero no matter how many time the rifle is taken down. Excellent setup.

I have a Browning cantilever mount, so I fitted a nice, older Leupold "Rimfire Special" scope on my SA-22. I was not particularly happy with the accuracy, and ended up removing it. I like the rifle much better without the scope - it retains its slim lines and in my mind at least, it makes for a much handier rifle.... but I have other .22 rimfires that do have scopes, so it's not like I'm missing something. If you have other scoped .22s, I would not put a scope on an SA-22. That's me though, and not you! Enjoy your rifle however you like! :) In comparison with the dovetailed receiver (if you have one), JCooperfan1911 is correct - the cantilever is much better.

I have both as well, I wouldn’t modify the Belgium one I have but I never put a scope on the Japanese one either.

Seems odd that your loading port is on the left side, but your cross-bolt safety is on the right.
Actually I like it.
It "feels" more natural to lower the rifle after firing and have the loading port facing up without flipping it over, or looking over to the other side.
Bold move to improve on JMB's design.
Lol
And the Schnabel forearm is +++
