I'm new to the .22 platform and I'm picking up a Browning Buckmark today. Is there any FMJ ammo for 22LR? Or is there a "best" 22LR that you'd recommend for this which will not lead the barrel excessively?

22's are just made for cheap, bulk fun. :D

Load up on whatever you get. Some people's 22's react different to different brands of the bulk stuff. Get whatever works best for you.

CCI mini mags are usually great performers in just about anything and still relatively cheap.

I just run 1000's of whatever bulk brands I can get at wal mart and snake the barrel afterwards. YMMV

I use CCI minimags as well. They always work great. Be advised that Buckmarks can be finicky eaters and won't function with some of the cheaper ammo. Mine wont cycle any bulk ammo worth a yankee poodle dang.

My buckmark has eaten everything I've fed it. I put nothing but the cheap 550 round bricks in it and aside from the occasional dud, it works fine. Accuracy is fine. The CCI minimags are a little more expensive, but are probably more reliable. Luckily, paper targets give you time to rack the slide once if the cheaper 22 bullet misfires. My vote: Federal 550. 19 bucks. Available at walmart.

I think all 22 auto-loaders can be finicky eaters!

Try a few small boxes of each before you run off and buy 1000 rounds.

I love minimags for squirrels or punching paper, but the bulk stuff isn't that much worse under 75 yards imho. I'll go squirrel hunting in a skinny minute if all I have is some junk bulk...it still shoots minute of squirrel at the worst.

For the record, I own two Marlin 60's that have each digested 10's of 1000's of rounds of who knows what and still run like a champ. However, one loves federal bulk and pukes on Remington...the other does the opposite so ymmv. I can never remember which one loves which.

Yeah, you won't hear complaints about the bulk stuff from me. Even if I have 10-20 duds out of 1000, I really don't care. Just cycle the action and resume fire. Of course I tend to be a plinkster with 22's. Tin cans and clay pigeons on custom wire coat hanger stands fear me. :neener:

The reactive stuff like that really helped get my kids and my girlfriend started enjoying it. My girlfriend has since moved on to my AR and loved it, too. She got a little teary eyed when I mentioned possibly trading off the AR for a Marlin 336 and a magazine fed 22. :uhoh:

I use the same ammo in my squirrel rifles. Adud on the range is somewhat irritating but in the woods it can become very frustrating. I bought a 100 ct box of Remington Yellowjackets which are about 120 fps faster than the minimags. They were flawless in the Buckmark(except they turned everything gold including my hands) but FTF 2 out of every ten round magazine in my Magtech semi-auto rifle. Not acceptable.

The Yellowjackets are Hyper Velocity rounds. According to Remington, the 33gr.Truncated Cone Hollow Point has a muzzle velocity of 1500fps and 1075 fps at 100 yards. Muzzle energy of 165ft.lbs and 85 ft.lbs. at 100yds. Is that zinging?

I will have to try those, thanks.

Try 'em all. ;)

That's the wondrous thing about 22's. Most anyone can afford to buy 50-100 rounds of every type they have at the store and see which ones group the best. :D

Never too early to start.

This is my 4 year old grand daughter Charity with my Browning Buckmark. She fired from about 12 feet. (I know where her trigger finger is and corrected her after this picture was taken.)

My BuckMark 22 eats all of the Rem. Yellowjackets I can pour down its throat, sure doesn't like any Winnie I try to shoot tho, too waxy I guess?! Make sure you keep the slide and the mag clean, really makes the difference!

Winchester white box ammo is weak enough so that my Camper sometimes won't cycle; maybe once in every 20 rounds. No problems with anything else though.

The Buckmark will shoot any .22 LR ammo you can load. For plinking and practice the cheap bulk ammo that comes loose in a box of 500 or 525 from Walmart or other discount store will work. The occasional misfire you get with these .22's is almost always the fault of the ammo.

If you shoot competition where you need accuracy and reliability get standard velocity ammo or match grade that's more expensive like CCI pistol match or green tag, Wolf Match, Winchester SXT22 or other pistol match ammo. I've found shooting off a bench with red dot sight at 25 yds the match ammo will usually shrink groups in half or better but it depends upon the brand of ammo. Test a box in your pistol to see what shoots the best before buying quantity.

I use blue box Federal or American Eagle. Both 40 grain. Have also used some of the cheaper bulk stuff, but it seems to make everything dirty quicker.
