So last night I was hanging out with a buddy who likes guns as much as I do .. I was over at his house and he went to sleep and I stayed up to hang out with some old friends I hadn't seen in a while .. I noticed outside there was a car parked outside of his house at the bottom of his driveway .. I told another buddy we should go check it out .. We went out the garage and as soon as we opened the garage these punks jumped back in their car and drove off extremely fast .. We did a walk around the outside and everything looked alright .. We had figured they were gonna vandalize the cars (There were some BMW's in the driveway) and felt like we had made them stop whatever they were doing .. So today I called my buddy who went to sleep early and told him about the little incident and he said "Please tell me your joking" and I asked why and he told me that he got in his truck this morning and noticed that his gun was missing.. He thought about it for a second and figured he had brought it inside last night before he went to sleep.. He thought this because the magazines for the gun were still in there along with his checkbook and a few other personal things (sunglasses ..etc) .. Long story short, the punks that we thought we would go out and scare off happened to be armed with a loaded gun .. Kinda scary when you think about it..

Gun stored in an unlocked vehicle? Very bad idea!

What? Please show me where I ever stated the car was unlocked.. They broke in.. The truck was locked ..

Ouch. Thanks for posting this; it serves as an excellent reminder for why I don't leave any guns in my car unless i'm sitting in it ;)

Ya it was his gun car (a little bersa .380) but he doesn't have many guns .. I feel horrible it happened but looking back I am glad I didn't try going after these punks .. I had no idea they were armed ..

A gun should never be left in a car unless it's in a safe.
I had no idea they were armed ..
You said you thought they were up to no good so why would you let your guard down. always assume the worse case scenario and you will always come out ahead.

I won’t even start to discuss the fact that because of your friends carelessness there are now a few punks in Houston who are now armed but they might not have been before.

First, you say:

He thought about it for a second and figured he had brought it inside last night before he went to sleep.. He thought this because the magazines for the gun were still in there along with his checkbook and a few other personal things (sunglasses ..etc) ..

And then you say:

Please show me where I ever stated the car was unlocked.. They broke in.. The truck was locked ..

Did they "break" in, or did they use a slimjim?

And yes, it is never a good idea to leave a gun in a vehicle where it can be easily accessed.

Ha! you guys never stop making me laugh .. Some of you people never cease to amaze me .. Now it is a mans fault for getting his car broken into .. The TRUCK was slim jimmied into.. We looked at the CARS (BWM's) not thinking they would break into the least flashy car out there (And there were about 10 cars outside). I can't help but smile when I think about how ignorant some people can be.. The victim of a automobile robbery.. he is asleep.. And he is at fault? You guys will one day see how ridiculous your mentality is.. Thats all I can say.. And I suppose you are of same liberal mindset that thinks its a guns fault that people die? Whats your rational? Wait I know! It was the sporting goods store's fault for selling the gun that was stolen!! And it was the states fault for allowing us to have guns in our car!! Or maybe the truck manufacture for not making the door impenetrable!! LOL I get a kick out of these guys .. If your house was to be broken into and everything stolen.. Would it be your fault? I don't think so .. :neener:

In case you didn't notice .. I never said the gun wasn't secure nor the doors unlocked .. Assumptions are not factual .. So why make assumptions??

Then I'd guess y'all messed up for not noticing they had broken into your buddy's truck and getting a plate number of the fleeing vehicle for the police, or for assuming they were the same "punks" if at a different location -- you may have prevented a crime but unrelated to your buddy's problem. And how did your buddy fail to notice his truck had been broken into, if it was locked? and why would he be surprised the gun was gone? "Forgetting" where he left a gun is even worse than leaving it in an unlocked vehicle!

Something doesn't add up. Some GMC/Chevy pickups are unlockable because of the sliding rear window -- my second wife had one, couldn't leave anything of value in it, ever.

There is a bunch of closed on Sunday auto dealers along I-45 S. People park on the side streets to browse the lots without salesmen pouncing on them on Sundays. Punks walk around carrying towels to protect their hands when they smash the glass to rob the cars. The Police know about it, but pretty much ignore it.

Perhaps this is an unintended consequence of the "traveling law clarification" that has more folks without CHL keeping a gun in the car. The punks break into ten cars, find one gun and are happy.

A Bersa is probably not worth filing an insurance claim for -- but have to have evidence of forced entry and a police report to collect.

I'd say the fact that the gun is gone is a pretty obvious indication it wasn't secure...while it is obviously not the man's fault that his truck was broken into, it is his responsibility to keep guns out of places that they are easily removed from. If the sporting goods stores kept loaded firearms outside their store in a truck overnight not secured well enough to avoid theft, i'd say they were being irresponsible with those guns too. The truck wasn't even parked in the garage from your description of events, and vehicle theft is an extremely common problem all over the country, in good and bad neighbourhoods both. Leaving loaded guns in cars overnight is not a good idea(tm).
I hope he gets it back and no crimes have been committed with it when he does

I have seen many threads in the past about "Which rifle makes the best truck gun?" or "Which pistol should I conceal in my vehicle?" I would be interested to see a pole on how many of these people actually bring their vehicle weapon in with them at night. Sometimes I bring my weapon back into the house, and sometimes I do not. Mostly, it depends on the weather and time of year. Luckily for me, I live in an area where this is a secure option for me to have. I guess my point is that hopefully none of the negative responses to this thread
are hypocritical. It is unfortunate that this gun owner was a victim. Even more reason to over exercise caution with the storage of his firearms. I wish him luck.

Very well put .. :)

We went to the police station and the car (which I described to police) was involved in a hit-n-run about 10 minutes after this happened ..They caught up with them today and they are paying a another little visit to them .. The cop asked me over and over if I was sure about the description.. almost second guessing me .. finally he said “The reason I kept second guessing you was to make sure your story wouldn’t change .. We found those guys about a block away last night ..In the exact car you described.. they had hit a car then parked a street over” I guess the guys lived close by .. He may get his gun back after all .. Time will tell! Better than nothing!!
