last night made me thankful for my gun

If it's organized crime, you probably should call the police, if not for your safety, to protect whoever they would harm next.

Also, I don't think he said he was willing to die. He said he was willing to not call the cops in a situation like this.

I've read so far the OP is blaming the weapon for his poor behavior. "I almost shot someone for walking into my home (which I don't lock up) unannounced." It must be the fault of the pistol. The fact that my friends know (apparently) that I don't lock my doors couldn't possibly have been a contributing factor
He said he couldn't shoot someone if he didn't have one, which is the truth. The problem is that he might need to shoot a violent criminal.

Your other thread is so funny. I seriously laughed out loud. Wow.

If we take the guns away no one gets shot. THAT came right out of Sarah Brady's playbook.

He also wouldn't shoot someone if he exercised a little commmon sense.

"Please define self worth, I must have missed something."

I don't see a self worth problem. I see lack of planning and training. Your safest best was to get everybody into the house and call the PD. Don't try to interact with these kinds of people, they are screwed up in the head.

"Now, back to the topic: hey, it sounds like locking your doors might be a decent idea. Then you might not have to kill everyone who walked in unannounced."

Now THERE'S an excellent idea!!:D

If you have time and need to dig out a gun and load it you have gone far past time to call the police. How they treat someone who might be having a bad day is not your concern. You, as a law abiding citizen who pays the salaries of police with your taxes, have every right to expect the police to respond properly in this situation. The saying "When seconds count, police are minutes away" is very true. Guns are for when seconds count. If you have minutes call the police and let them sort the situation out. That's their job. Even if it's to help someone who is confused or having a bad day.

No Cell Phone??

Hell, even the folks on welfare can get free cell phones, even little kids have cell phones. If you can afford a Glock, you can spring for a limited time cell phone like a Trac phone.

I'll be damned if I lock up my guns where I can't get to one within a few seconds because of an incident where a friend comes walking in my house unexpectedly. I would educate my friends first that I will be armed, and walking in without any notification, or at least a simple knock before entering might well produce lead flying in their direction. MY friends are smart enough to understand that might be a real danger, and will change their ways quickly.

Yeah I would've called the cops from my cell phone as soon as he either clearly showed signs of driving drunk or (especially) if he followed me or was threatening. And if I didn't have a cell phone I'd sure as heck have called the cops from home as soon as he pulled up and blocked my driveway.

simple rule.... by your posting, you sound like a guy thats willing to learn from others. Thats what life is about, maturing an learning...some may seem to think they know it all, an have all the answers. Your post was about the event that happened, not the event about others walking in on you in your house. You did the best thing according to your knowledge at the time, my only advice is that I agree with Rockwell, you should of called the police as soon as you got inside your house instead of digging for your gun, then they would of been on the way...maybe...but then after getting your gun, if you had to use it, there would of been that call that you were trying to get help.

I agree...

With what the others have said.
1. Don't ever lead them to your own home.
2 You NEED a cell phone.
3. An loaded gun is not a weapon, unless you can throw really well.
4. Your friend should have gone in the house with you and not been left in the driveway with the nut.

Lastly, you should have been armed (presuming CCW is legal there), told him to stop as he initially walked up your drive, and dropped the nut a few steps later.

You got lucky and he may be back for more. Be prepared next time.
