budget rifles

I have .224s, .243s, .284s, .308s, .338. The 6.5s and .277s won’t do anything the .284s won’t do.
Yep, I agree. I finally gave in simply because of popularity/availability/price of ammo. Kinda the same reason I finally got around to owning 9mm a few years ago.
. I've hunted with 30-30 and 30-06 for decades. Never wanted or needed a 6.5cm, but after I finally did buy one, they aren't bad.

I have experienced nothing but excellent performance out of my 2 RAR rifles (6.5 CM and 300 BLK) as well as my Mossberg- thunder ranch MVP model in 223. The MVP uses a AR magazine, and mine only works well with Pmags.

My 30-06 Ruger American is the most accurate rifle I have ever owned. Butt ugly but knots butt accurate. Hydro dipping can fix the ugly. My son bought a Moosburg patriot revere and it is a nice looking rifle and also very accurate. Can’t really go wrong with either one.

I will echo the sentiment that if budget allows for a Weatherby Vanguard/Howa 1500, I would put that at the top of the list.

That aside, if I were looking again in the "budget rifle" realm, my first choice would probably be a Ruger American (Predator model if they have it in the caliber I wanted). They just seem to be the best value for your dollar at the moment.

I have a Savage Axis and do like it. The trigger as it comes is horrible but the M*CARBO kit makes it much more usable. It's no Timney, but it's a huge improvement.

My biggest gripe with the Axis is the 90 degree bolt throw, it can make mounting a scope an adventure if the ocular lense is even moderately sized. I had to go to X-High rings so the bolt handle wouldn't rub the scope on my Axis. Could have also gotten a different bolt handle, but that would have been more expensive. Not the end of the world but a bit annoying. I got my Axis for basically free ($50 with a $50 rebate) so no question I'd do that again, but at full price I'd pay a little extra for the Ruger.

What about the Remington 783's. I have one in 30-06. If you can still get them, they are a good value.
Ive shot a few and built a "custom" gun on one for a friend. I think they are fine rifles, and perhaps a slightly better buy when available in the same price range as the axis.
They have a better magazine than the standard American.
They also have a nicer feeling stock than the Americans or Axis.

Barrels are functionally the same as the Savages, and elbow grease goes a long way and making them nicer.

Problem with a 783 is Remington no longer supports them. You're on your own if you buy one and it has a problem.

AR's I've got, just been thinking adding a bolt gun might help ease that "what next" feeling. to make matters worse I'm also thinking .243
I don't think you can go wrong with .243 Win (I'm assuming that's the particular 6mm you were referring to.) Especially if you can get one cut faster than 1:10 to run heavier/longer target bullets. My Savage bolt gun in .243 Win is in 1:10 unfortunately but it is very accurate and super soft shooting.
I have several heavy barrel AR's in .243 Win (20,22,24") in 1:8.5 twist and they shoot like lasers.
I would really like to get another .243 Win bolt gun in a faster twist, though since I already have a couple 6mm CR I already have that covered. Maybe a fast twist .244/6mm Rem.....Good luck!

That is a fair assessment of the situation, but the things are fairly simple and the parts are readily available. I'm not sure how Savage compatible. They are beyond barrels, but I'm guessing you could probably use the extractors and ejectors too.

Yep, I wouldn't be scared to buy one because I can fix or upgrade just about anything that could go wrong. But I wouldn't recommend it to someone who would have to pay a gunsmith to replace an ejector or trigger.

Insert my typical ruger American mobile advertisement. Shortened notes: Owned 4, been floored with the accuracy and quality. Have has 3 savage axis's, 2 patriots an XPR and i feel like im forgetting some.
All of which were serviceable except one of the patriots had major accuracy issues.
https://youtube.com/clip/UgkxZQSsaT1jjz1ey9vF0m3oA8n6R4Fi_fwl here is a great example of what Remington has been doing to their guns.
My ranked list goes
1: American
2: XPR
3: Axis
4: TC compass (are these even made anymore?)
5: Patriot

I have been trying to grow my hair out, maybe a bun is in my future ;). But I bought a 6.5CM after I saw shelves full of the ammo and nothing else. I guess it varies by region or area but there has been plenty of variety in 6.5CM throughout the recent dearth. At least as much or more so than anything else. So, I have two rifles now in 6.5CM.

I always thought the Winchester XPRs looked real nice on paper, but hardly ever hear about them on here.

I pretty heavily considered one.
i had one in 308 and i really liked it just not the caliber. I wouldn't pay 550 bucks for one but for the 350 i did it was fantastic. Whoteewho on youtube featured one in the best caliber around (270win ;)) that was shooting way out of its price range. Mine was close but not as good.

My new Savage.243 has a 1-9.25 twist. Splitting hairs, but it’s fast enough to stabilize 105 grain bullets.

This is terribly incorrect.

State how; I'm waiting breathlessly. We would all like to learn something new. I believe I had to replace a firing pin spring in one bolt and repaired one rifle by replacing an extractor in the last 10 years, and most of my friends and customers have bolt actions. Just my experience. Give me more examples of malfunctions; I'm interested!
