Bug-out vehicle for SHTF situation?

Take your pick

It probably wouldn't work in texas, but in California?

I need a vehicle. You have a vehicle. I have a gun. You don't.

I'm not advocating this, but...

Actually, an off-road road motorcycle ON THE RAILROAD TRACKS makes a lot of sense. Probably away from roadways, other vehicles, etc. Not likely to run into any hostiles........

That woould work in many areas, but in my neck of the woods going by way of the railroad tracks is scary enough on a normal day!!

At my location. (A stone's throw from the beach and a harbor) We have an aquatic BO scenario worked out in case of civil unrest.

IF you are forced off the regular roads, vehicle size becomes a factor as a function of terrain. Often, "skinnier is better". My relatively narrow-width older Toyotas can get through places where a full-sized critter is too fat. Humvees don't even have a prayer. The marketing tool of "our small car is bigger than their small car" just doesn't help.

Two blocks to the marina and I got my pick to just about any long range boat available.

50 miles to Bahamas and tons of out islands to sustain life.

I have a Suzuki Samurai which I paid $200 from a police impound and am now in $15000. I just upgraded to Dana 44 axles with air lockers this year. The 16 valve sidekick engine gets 30mpg in Hi range and and cruise at 70mph+. The low range (4.8 transfer X 2.0crawler boxX 4.88 axles X 4.25 1st gear)) pulls 35 Swampers over anything , full external cage could have some 1/4" armor plate bolted over it for a Madmax mobile. I was gonna put in a Rabbit turbo diesel but wanted more HP than any light diesel could give. My son has a pretty much stock Samurai which will go any where sane and is being shipped to Hawaai where he is a researcher.;)

I have 3 choices for SHTF Vehicles, depending on situation. The biggest danger nearby is the Indian Point Nuclear Facility. I'm within 50 miles of it by water (the toasty warm zone) and west of NYC.

Travel north is not an option in a fallout scenario. West would take me through the city where a car is worthless, but a bike may not be (and certainly a bike and a shotgun would get me pretty far).

I do, however, live on the water with any number of rich peoples boats at my disposal, if I can get through the East River/Hellgate around Manhatten. Again, Northeast up in Long Island sound is not really a viable option given the usual western wind.

So my options are:
1) '98 AWD Subaru Forester. You wouldnt believe how much crap i can cram into this baby, she is surefooted, and easy on the gas.

2) '83 Honda CB550SC Motorcycle. The new arrival, I got started on this motorcycle garbage after reading that Cheyrnoble page, and this is a starter bike before i can afford the Suzuki V-Strom 1000 (Kinda dual sport, but mostly road bike) A motorcycle can really take you places in traffic where you would be dead in the water in a car. They are more vulnerable in a riot situation, but I am in a nice enough neighborhood (low population, all single/double houses, no apartment buildings) that I could hold out for a long time... if I figured out that whole desalinization thing.

3) The aforementioned rich people's yachts. I worked as a launch operator at a marina a couple years back, so I've basically cased all the boats and have my top 30 that would be the first picks. The diesel trawlers can go up to 2000 miles on 1 tank of gas (slower than an iceberg), or I could go with the more-secure-in-the-long-run power sailboat for a little Waterworld action.

Yeah , a good many Demorat barons who live on the Hudson. But have to watch their ARMED security guards. "take the peons guns so just MY guards have them" is the mantra of of my Senatorsess and sooooo many more of her ilk:barf: :barf:

My 1995 Crown Victoria LX, driven far enough to get out of town (and/or borrow my dad's F150). Then, we take the horses when the truck's gas tank is empty.

Has anyone here considered keeping a crate or trailer containing a disassembled ultralight or gyrocopter (Little Nelly, yeah! :D) in the garage or garden shed? With a couple of jerrycans of gas it should have reasonable range and no traffic headaches. Take off down the street and head for the hills.

As an added bonus 'testing' this makes a nice hobby. . . :)

Cheers,

The little helicopter idea sounds pretty good for some circumstances. It still suffers from insufficient cargo capacity and passenger carrying capacity but it excels for a single person.

Another possible problem..I've always assumed that any use of the airways would be strictly controlled by the military when SHTF. I'm sure this would depend on the reason for the SHTF though.

Here are some awesome pics of the Jeep Rescue. I'm not a proponent of big vehicles for a BOV but this baby is sweet.

Bubbles,

Your M35-A2 was part of the inspiration behind the paint on my Scout, on page 1 of this thread. I was going to do a desert scheme, but while looking at different camo jobs on the 'net, I saw yours and decided to go with the current look. Not the same, but similar. Neat to run across you here!

I'm already here... done bugged out already...

I will just stay where I am. I'm already where I would want to be. I'll just change batteries in my pocket radio when needed, have plenty on hand, and see how others are making out. By the time I need to go out for anything, it will all be settled out, finished off, or done for...

If I'm in my vehicle, I'm good for quite a while... and if not, what's in my shoulder bag and pockets will do just fine... :D

Keep in mind when deciding on which vehicle you would get, what is the likelyhood of easliy finding spare parts and maintenance. Some of those more "exotic" vehicles would have a hard time getting spares in "Any Town" USA.

From the owner of one "narrow-width" '96 Tacoma, and a soon_to_be acquired '85 EFI Toyota (longbed, single cab, 4x4)..

All I can say is..

Amen to that, Mr. Eatman!!

:) Example: I was exploring back-country one day, and at a gully the old jeep trail was half washed out. I cut uphill a bit, nearing the sideways Oops! angle, and just barely made it. Spooky, but I made it. Any wider and it would have been Rollover City. (I sez, "Hmmm. I don't think a Game Warden's Blazer would get through this..." :D)

Another time I was exploring a dry creek, and encountered a tight spot. A giant boulder on one side, and a four-inch oak tree root on the other. I scraped the mirrors a bit, but got on through for another couple of miles of wandering...

There's excess fat in more than just a couch potato's body.

Chevy Blazer K5. Cheap to buy. Cheap to fix up. Lots of spare parts.

Could throw some secondary transportaion in the back also if wanted.
