To build an AR could you just buy the upper and lower units and then put it toghther? or is the more that you would need to buy? how expensive could this run?

Yes, if you buy a complete upper and complete lower.

On price, it all depends on what components you use. You can go cheap all the way to crazy expensive.

I built one off of parts I accumulated from the equipment exchange on ar15.com.
Breakdown was $80 for a stag stripped lower, $65 for a stag LPK, $300 for a colt A2 20" 1/7 twist upper and $45 for an A2 buttstock assembly. This was my first build so I needed to buy roll pin punches, I think that came to about $25 bucks. I used the tutorials on the build it yourself section on ar15.com. The stag lower was cheap since I purchased four at the same time. I also got a good price on the colt upper since it also included the bolt carrier, bolt and charging handle. Plus the transfer fees for the lowers came to $50. Still it can be done for a reasonable amount if you're willing to wait and assemble your parts collection piecemeal. Of course you could use only new top of the line parts from LMT or Colt along with all the latest tactical rail systems, lights, lasers and optics and spend three or four times as much. You might be better served spending all that money on ammo to practice w/ your basic rifle. Good luck if you decide to do it on your own. :)

Yes, but Be aware that Colts come in bid hole and small hole versions, so there might be issues mating them up to different uppers/lowers. It's "correctable", but one more hassle. Not to mention, the premium you pay for the Colt.

Shopping used, I've seen complete uppers/lowers for sale $475 total - but that's some serious shopping aroung and you have to be Johnny-on-the-spot and jump on the deal. That's shopping THR adn AR15.com for deals. They're out there. Much more than that, you might be better served getting a kit - under $600 or so. Above that, buy complete used Non-Colt rifle. You can find them all day for $700's.

a few months ago i built a "retro" ar-15 ( vietnam era, triangular full lenth forend). as a matter of fact i joined this forum in order to ask several questions about that project.
by far, the best deal i found on an assembled lower was from a texas company called lonestar something or other, but they were on the ball,i recommend them. i think i paid around $220 for the full lower from rock river, with A-2 solid buttstock, and $140 for the bolt carrier group and charging handle (also rock river).
by then i'd already ordered a brand new colt upper from CDNN for $369 (still in stock,i believe). it had no forward assist ( no big deal to me ) but had SMALL holes, making it compatible with the newer lowers.
including shipping and a reasonable $25 to my local FFL, i have less than $800 in it. i ain't complainin' !!:D
