forgive me posting everywhere but I seem to have a lot of questions.

I know I can/could build a AR-15 for about $500/$600 and that seems alot cheaper than in-store pricing. So if I built a .308 AR, would would it be cost saving for me to build it myself?

Now I know about the problems of propriety ar-10 designs but can I build a .308 AR-10 syle rifle for cheaper than say the rifle mentioned in the post below?

DPMS Panther 7.62 NATO Sportical
Price: $882.99 @ impact guns

You are not likely to build for less money than the DPMS models bought from a competitive dealer (R Guns is probably cheaper yet for DPMS .308's).

The problem is that the platforms are all proprietary and there is little competition for the assembly parts, so you can't build better and cheaper the same way you can with an AR-15.

If you want a specific configuration or barrel, building will let you have exactly what you want without paying for parts that will be thrown away. For instance, you could get a CMMG lower that takes G3 mags, or you could do an upper with a custom barrel of higher quality than most of the OEM barrels. But you probably won't save money if you're looking for something that one of the manufacturers offers as a complete rifle.
