I am planning on building an AR15 varmint rifle. Kinda want one in 204 Ruger not completely sure. Any suggestions on good parts suppliers? Leaning toward the more standard bull barrell scoped rifle. Tryin to keep it under $1000.

I recently build one on a double star lower with a dpms parts kit and a model 1 upper.

I went with the 24 inch extra heavy bull barrel, and believe me the sucker is heavy. If I had it to do all over again I might have gone with a 20 and fluted it.
I have not shot the gun yet, but I am expecting good things. If this thread is still going strong tomorrow I will post a pic.

for the .204 ruger... you want to try to stay at 24" so you can squezze all that the round has out of it. the differance between the 24" and the 20 " barrel is around 50-70 fps slower. not much, but when you can go faster, why not? the best length seems to really be 23" but, its only a differance of 10-15 fps. so, you decide. also, i wouldnt hesitate buying a complete rifle from model 1 sales/ i hear really good thisng about there uppers, and there lowers are like any other. quality er shaw barrels and the finish is both matching, and good. all that i believe is needed, is a lower parts kit, and they ship the gun right to your door. or so i have herd, but overall, a good quality gun for the price. it can always be upgraded later.(i.e. better trigger, but since you will need a lower parts kit, i would start out with a good rock rive trigger.) i would continue some research, amsybe over at

hope this helps, brian.

i have been doing a lot of research on this new round, whell, its not new, but to me it is, it is known as the 20 practical. its based off of the .223 as a parent cartridge. it can achieve 4200 fps, and it uses less powder then the .204. not much, but a little less. heres where i found the info.

its a lot of good reading if you want to. there is also a lot of other good info at that site. i am thinking of one day making an AR-15 upper in this round. hoping that i can maybe find someone that can maybe do a chrome lined 20 practical barrel. this will help aid in slowing of the barrel throte erosion.

a nother cartridge that is close to the .204, and was around longer, is the 20 Tactical. now dont get these two confused. the 20 TAC involves more case prep and then fireforming, and is based upon the 222 remington brass. the 20 PRACT is based off of the 20 TAC, without the forming issues, and the use of the ever popular .223. just neck down and load.
