Picked up a Makarov pistol at a gun show this past weekend, and have a question about it.

My impression of the import regulations regarding firearms is that they must bear certain markings from both their manufacturers, and their importers. Among those are the country of manufacturer, the manufacturer itself, the importer's name and location, the gun's model (if any) and caliber, and a serial number applied by the importer if none is provided by the maker (or if the maker's doesn't meed requirements, such as if it uses non-Roman or non-Arabic characters.)

My gun has the circled number 10, indicating Bulgarian manufacture, but does not actually bear the name "Bulgaria" that I can see. It's importer (PW Arms) and their location, as well as the caliber, are marked on the right side of the frame.

On the left side of the frame is that circled 10, followed by a serial number in the following format: the Cyrillic letters И and М, a two-digit number, and a three-digit number. That's it for the frame. This serial number is duplicated on the left side of the slide as well.

There are no other markings visible on the assembled pistol, and I have not yet disassembled it. Is it likely there are other markings that are hidden?

I expect this to be a sturdy and reliable pistol, and I do intend to make a shooter of it(once I find some ammo.) It is in good condition, with some light holster wear near the muzzle end of the lower slide, and some miniscule nicks in the wooden grips. The bore appears pristine. The rear sight appears to have been drifted slightly to right of center.

The gun is well-oiled, and very clean. As best as I can tell from the guides at the Makarov.com site, it was manufactured in 1979. Sale price was $275 OTD. I remember them being significantly less than that in recent years, but I expect that it will not be long before they're going for significantly more, and I'll still have this one, so I'm not worried about what I paid.

So, Mak-gurus, what say you? Who's carrying one?

Using various ammo search engines you can find decent prices on bulk 9x18 ammo right now. Have a good number of handguns and really enjoy shooting the different 9x18 chambered pistols. The Makarov is not to everyone's liking but they can become addictive.

I don't have a Bulgarian but my East German Mak does have the maker from Germany as well as the importer stamped. I have a couple of Polish 9x18 as well and love to shoot the round. Solid steel guns with light recoil and very accurate, they do tend to run a bit heavy compared to guns I normally carry. I have carried mine in the past but it has been a while.
Some of the local guys will carry Fiocchi ammo but at $29 per 50. I have purchased most of my ammo online for half that price and the Fiocchi runs great in mine. I also bought Hornady Critical Defense which ran smoothly when I shot it and I may have one box left. I looked online and there are a lot of places selling it well below $16 per 50. I am also set to reload it but have not tried that particular round yet.

Mine is Russian, great gun for a great price a while back.
Target Sports USA has Privi.. (stock varies)
Widners is a good place to check as well.
S+B is brass cased reloadable as well.
Missouri Bullet company makes cast bullets (with and without HI-Tek coating) for it. Shot lots of the lead lubed ones with 3.7 of Universal.

The Pierce grips a nice if you don't mind changing the looks.
Hope you enjoy your Mak.

I purchased 9x18 brass from Starline and reload. You can also trim and fire form 9x19 to use to reload 9x18. When I first picked up my first Mak, Starline did not have 9x18 Mak brass, so I purchased a few boxes of Fiocchi 9x18 Makarov ammo (has brass case) from LAX Ammo for about $16 a box to start obtaining some 9x18 headstamped brass.

Enjoy your new gun! I love my Bulgarian Makarov and carry it everyday. I have it on right now. It's a great gun that is very accurate and has never malfunctioned. I also have a Russian commercial, a Bulgarian commercial, and an East German. The Russian is in .380 and I load for it. I stocked up on 9mm Makarov ammo, but I mostly shoot the .380. I have a bunch of other guns, revolvers and autos, but the Makarov is my favorite. Really can't say enough good about it.

Good choice. I have had my Russian Makarov for around 25 years now and it has been completely reliable.

Congrats OP on the new Makarov. I have a Soviet, East German and Bulgarian Makarov. White the East German is the "top of the line" of the three, I will speak a heresy here - the my Bulgarian is superior to my Soviet Makarov PM. Better fit, finish, smoother trigger, but both are equally reliable and accurate.

Mine is stone cold reliable as well. If they weren't the designer probably would have been vacationing in Siberia!

Accurate and just fun to shoot.

Good price on that Makarov.

I have three Bulgies and a Russian.

Maks are harder to find these days, but they're still addictive.

Congrats on a solid purchase!
