Cost to reload 1000 rounds for me today:

91.00 1000 147 grain winchester fmj bullets from Midway,
70.99 1000 pieces of LC 1x fired brass 100% processed from Scharchs
20.00 1000 rifle primers
90.00 6.2 lbs of 4064 powder bought in the 8lb jug

Total 272.00

Thats 27.2 cents per round if you throw the brass away
If you figure 6 loadings from a normal semi auto.

It brings the cost down to 21 cents per round.

Then there is your time.

AIM is selling the SA for 17.6 cents per round. The brass is not reloadable since its berdan primed.

As far as ammo markup goes, considering that the government pays only a small fraction of a penny for a round of ball ammo, I'd say there is a signifigant markup somewhere along the way.

A fraction of a cent, could you provide us with a source for this knowledge?

The cost of raw brass for the cartridge and the bullet is more than a fraction of a cent.

cheapest .308 is the s.a. in the 140 rnd pack $37, another shop wanted $45
for the same pack and the worst was $69 for the same 140 rnds at a shop across town. this is all in the metro phoenix area..........
You need to start ordering ammo on the internet. Even buying in bulk at gun shows is cheaper than that. I understand if you don't have the money, but you can do much better on price.

I don't have a link on hand; I just remember reading about one of the recent military ammo contracts, where they purchased (I believe) 225 billion rounds of 5.56 for a specified cost, and I seem to remember it working out to well less than one cent per round. Granted that is 5.56. I'll post the info if I see it again.

A group buy sounds like a good idea to me.
I wonder how workable it would be.
Yet another reason to work more overtime...

I've recently resorted to Silver Bear 308 for my plinking rounds, was $150/K.

BTW, the .gov pays considerably more than a penny per round for ammo. Raw material costs alone would run tenfold that number, add in overhead, and that ATK runs the ammo plants.

Was at the local gunshop today (local being relative, Green Top for Richmonders). They were flogging SA battlepacks for, IIRC, $48 each.

I really need to get in touch with AIM. Man, my credit card hates me so much now...

if i weren't in debt up to my eyeballs trying to build credit and pay on a new truck i'd get a 980 can of that SA stuff from aim

The government doesn't buy anything that cheap...if anything, they pay more than us.

You can bet on it.

A group buy would be interesting. I wonder how many rounds we'd need to buy to have the same purchasing power someone big like Walmart.

Man, I am glad I have 7140 rds of South African here at the house for my M1A scout/squad. All this talk of it drying up here and on other web sites makes me want to order another 1260 round can:evil: .

Flip.

So I take it from the discussion that are not really any other surplus sources for .308 on the market right now. I am glad I have a few cases saved up. Hope I don't go through it too fast.
